Product Description
The cardigan is knitted flat sideways, starting from the middle of the back, casting on stitches for the front, connecting them to the back, working back and front together, decreasing for the sleeve and ending at the cuffs. For the warmer climate version the sleeve ends at 3/4 length and for the colder climate the sleeve continues until reaching the wrist in the twisted ribbing pattern. On the sleeve there is a decorative Anemone lace stitch detail that is also present on the back. The other half of the cardigan is knitted symmetrically by picking up stitches from the first half of the back then continuing symmetrically as before.
Blue Gum Cardigan by Vera Loves Knitting
What is Being Made
The Blue Gum cardigan is a sophisticated knitted cardigan inspired by the natural colors and textures of Australian gum tree foliage. This design celebrates the blue, grey, and green hues found in eucalyptus leaves, complemented by the warm burnt reds and cream tones of the Australian landscape. The cardigan is available in two versions to suit different climates: a warmer-weather version with three-quarter length sleeves and a colder-climate version with full-length sleeves.
Construction and Techniques
The Blue Gum cardigan employs a distinctive sideways knitting construction method. The garment is knitted flat, beginning from the middle of the back section. Stitches are cast on for the front panels and then connected to the back, allowing the front and back to be worked together as a single piece. This technique creates seamless integration between sections and allows for precise shaping. Decreases are strategically incorporated to shape the sleeves, with the pattern concluding at the cuffs. This sideways approach provides excellent control over fit and allows for creative stitch placement across the garment.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch technique featured in this cardigan is fancy garter stitch, an elevated variation of traditional garter stitch. The designer has transformed the familiar and fundamental garter stitch into a decorative element that celebrates the textures and shimmer inspired by gum tree leaves. This textured approach adds visual interest and depth while maintaining the classic appeal of garter stitch construction.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Blue Gum cardigan is designed to be worked with 4-ply yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition and drape. This yarn weight is ideal for creating the detailed texture work featured in the fancy garter stitch sections while maintaining the garment's wearability across different seasons. The 4-ply weight allows the cardigan to be appropriately lightweight for the warmer-climate version while still providing adequate warmth in the colder-climate iteration.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, reflecting the sophisticated construction techniques and design elements involved. The sideways knitting method, combined with the integration of front and back panels worked together, requires experienced knitting skills and careful attention to shaping and decreases. The fancy garter stitch texture work adds another layer of complexity, making this an excellent project for accomplished knitters seeking a challenging and rewarding creation.
