Blossom & Vine Cowl by Megan Gonzalez
What Is Being Made
The Blossom & Vine Cowl is a knitted neck accessory designed by independent designer Megan Gonzalez. This cowl is a versatile piece that offers three size options to suit different preferences and body types. The garment features a circumference range of 25 inches (63.5 cm) for a fitted option, 37.5 inches (95 cm) for a standard fit, or 50 inches (127 cm) for a generous, oversized drape. All sizes share a consistent height of 11 inches (28 cm), making this cowl suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece around the neck and shoulders.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project is constructed using circular needles, which allows for seamless, in-the-round knitting. The circular needle construction eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric. The pattern incorporates several essential knitting techniques that contribute to the cowl's decorative appeal and structural integrity.
The design utilizes decreasing techniques to create shaping and textural interest throughout the piece. These decreases include k2tog (knit two stitches together), skpo (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over), and sk2po (slip one, knit two together, pass slipped stitch over), which are fundamental methods for reducing stitch count and creating decorative decreases. The pattern also incorporates yarn overs (yo), which create intentional holes and lacy elements that enhance the visual design and contribute to the "Blossom & Vine" aesthetic. The combination of decreases and yarn overs typically creates openwork patterns or subtle eyelet details characteristic of floral and botanical-inspired designs.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k): The fundamental stitch that forms the base fabric of the cowl
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping and pattern work
- Slip, knit, pass over (skpo): A left-leaning decrease that can be substituted with ssk (slip, slip, knit) for consistent stitch direction
- Slip two, knit two together, pass over (sk2po): A double decrease that removes two stitches at once, creating more dramatic shaping
- Yarn over (yo): Creates new stitches and intentional openings that form the lacy, decorative elements of the design
Yarn and Materials
The Blossom & Vine Cowl is designed to be worked in Aran or heavy worsted weight yarn, which provides excellent drape and warmth while remaining lightweight enough for a cowl. Yarn requirements vary by size: the smallest size requires 200 yards (180 meters), the medium size needs 300 yards (270 meters), and the largest size calls for 400 yards (360 meters).
The pattern suggests Blue Sky Fibers Extra, a premium yarn composed of 55% baby alpaca and 45% fine merino wool. This blend offers exceptional softness, breathability, and temperature-regulating properties. The suggested colorway is Lei, which likely complements the botanical theme of the design. Blue Sky Fibers Extra is available in 218-yard (199-meter) skeins weighing 150 grams (5.3 ounces), requiring 1 skein for the smallest size and 2 skeins for the medium and large sizes.
Needles and Tools
This project requires US 10/6.00 mm circular needles in lengths that vary by size: 24 inches (60 cm) for the smallest circumference, 32 inches (80 cm) for the medium size, and 40 inches (100 cm) for the largest size. The appropriate needle length ensures comfortable knitting without excessive fabric bunching or stretching.
Additional materials needed include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction points, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and any finishing work required.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 16 stitches and 23 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions and ensuring the cowl drapes as intended. Knitters should always swatch and measure gauge before beginning the project to account for individual tension variations.
