Blossom Dreams Cushion Cover by Ana Morais Soares
What Is Being Made
The Blossom Dreams Cushion Cover is a decorative crochet cushion cover designed to fit a standard 18" x 18" (45 cm x 45 cm) pillow insert. This intermediate-level project creates a finished cover with a vibrant, textured floral design using multiple coordinated yarn colors. The pattern is ideal for adding a handmade, artistic accent to home décor.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is a crochet project that employs a range of fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques. The pattern uses a combination of basic stitches and specialty stitch variations to build texture and visual interest. The use of spike half double crochet stitches creates dimensional effects by inserting the hook into spaces below the current row, allowing yarn to be pulled up to create raised, flower-like elements. The 4 double crochet cluster stitch adds additional textural complexity and helps define the blossom motifs throughout the cover.
Stitches Used
- Chain (Ch) – foundational stitch used to create the base and turning chains
- Single Crochet (Sc) – basic stitch providing structure and density
- Half Double Crochet (Hdc) – medium-height stitch used for body stitches
- Spike Half Double Crochet (SPhdc) – specialty stitch that creates dimensional flower petals by inserting the hook into indicated spaces below, pulling yarn up evenly with loops on the hook, then completing the stitch
- 4 Double Crochet Cluster (4dc-CL) – decorative cluster stitch grouping four double crochets together to form blossom centers and focal points
- Slip Stitch (Slst) – used for joining rounds and finishing edges
Materials and Tools
The Blossom Dreams pattern calls for Durable Coral cotton yarn in sport weight, a lightweight yarn ideal for creating drape and definition in cushion covers. The project requires a total of 8 skeins (400 grams / 1000 meters / 1088 yards) distributed across four coordinated colors:
- Color A (2190) – 2 skeins
- Color B (2180) – 2 skeins
- Color C (2195) – 2 skeins
- Color D (211) – 2 skeins
A 3.5mm crochet hook is used throughout the project, appropriately sized for sport weight yarn. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming, and a pre-made 45 cm x 45 cm (18" x 18") pillow insert to complete the finished cushion.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses fundamental crochet stitches like chain, single crochet, and half double crochet, the inclusion of specialty techniques such as spike half double crochet and decorative cluster stitches requires prior crochet experience and comfort with stitch placement and yarn tension control.
