Product Description
Art allows us to express our feelings and emotions, display our beliefs without saying a word.
Given everything that has been going on in the world lately, I wanted to make something to show my support for the Black Lives Matter movement. I almost felt silly – making a crochet project to show my support for something so massive, but then again, every little bit helps. We must continue to fight for equal rights long after this stops trending on instagram or twitter.
Black Lives Matter C2C Crochet Pattern by Jennifer Betts
What Is Being Made
This is a corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet project featuring the letters "BLM" (Black Lives Matter) worked in contrasting colors. The finished piece measures 15.25 inches wide by 11 inches tall, making it suitable for wall display, framing, or use as a decorative textile project. The design uses a two-color yarn combination to create the lettering against a background, allowing crafters to create a meaningful visual statement through needlework.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs the corner-to-corner (C2C) crochet technique, a popular method for creating graphical designs and pixel-art style images in crochet. The C2C method builds the fabric diagonally from one corner, with each "tile" representing one unit of the design. This technique is particularly effective for creating clear, defined letterforms and patterns. The pattern requires working with multiple yarn ends or bobbins for color changes, as the design necessitates switching between the blue and purple yarns multiple times throughout the project to form the letter shapes.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes three fundamental crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation and turning chains
- Double crochet (dc) – The primary stitch that forms the fabric structure; each tile consists of one turning chain 3 (ch3) plus 3 double crochets, counting as 4 double crochets total
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used for joining and finishing
Materials and Specifications
The project calls for Paintbox Simply Aran yarn in two colors: Marine Blue and Purple Pansy. Aran weight yarn (also known as worsted weight) is a medium-weight yarn that works up quickly and creates a fabric with good structure and drape. A 5mm crochet hook (US size H-8) is used to work with the aran weight yarn. The pattern requires 2 balls of yarn total, though crafters will need to manage multiple working ends of the blue yarn or create bobbins to accommodate the frequent color changes needed for the lettering.
Difficulty Level and Gauge
Rated as beginner-friendly, this pattern is accessible to newer crocheters while still producing a visually striking finished project. The gauge is 4 inches equals 5 tiles by 5 tiles, where each tile represents one set of turning chain 3 plus 3 double crochets. The pattern includes a detailed write-up with step-by-step photo tutorials and helpful tips to guide crafters through the construction process. A yarn needle and scissors are the only additional tools required beyond the hook and yarn.
