Bitzer, the Dog Knitted Toy by Stana D. Sortor
What Is Being Made
Bitzer, the dog is a beginner-friendly knitted stuffed toy available in two finished sizes: a large 27-inch version and a smaller 20-inch version. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a three-dimensional plush dog character suitable for children or as a decorative handmade toy. The design includes a fully knitted body with distinctive features such as a collar, ears, muzzle, and accessories including a hat and sweatband.
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
This knitting pattern employs fundamental techniques appropriate for beginners. The toy is constructed using a combination of double pointed needles and straight needles to create various components. The larger size version uses a double strain of yarn (two strands knitted together) to achieve the desired finished dimensions, while the smaller size uses a single strain of yarn. This technique allows crafters to control the final size and density of the finished toy without requiring a completely different pattern.
The pattern incorporates shaping techniques to create a three-dimensional form. Stuffing with polyester fiberfill creates the plush body structure, and the pattern includes instructions for inserting cleaner pipes (pipe cleaners) into the tail to allow for poseable shaping of this appendage.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the construction relies on fundamental knitting stitches suitable for toy making. The pattern uses basic knit and purl stitches combined with shaping decreases to form the dog's body, head, limbs, and facial features. The pattern structure suggests the use of increases and decreases to create the three-dimensional shaping necessary for a realistic toy form.
Yarn Materials and Weight
The pattern calls for approximately 100 grams of golden brown medium weight yarn for the smaller 20-inch size, or 200 grams for the larger 27-inch size. Additional yarn colors in medium weight include:
- Dark brown yarn for the collar and ears
- Black yarn for the muzzle and watch detail
- Blue yarn for the hat and sweatband
- White yarn for the sweatband and watch detail
These materials are specified as remnants, indicating that small quantities of contrasting colors are needed for the toy's distinctive character features.
Needles and Notions
For the larger 27-inch size, the pattern recommends US #7/4.5mm double pointed needles (set of 5) paired with matching straight needles of the same size. For the smaller 20-inch size, US #5/3.5mm double pointed needles (set of 5) are paired with corresponding straight needles.
Additional notions required for completing the toy include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming, scissors, stitch markers for tracking pattern sections, a row counter for maintaining progress, one small bag of polyester fiberfill for stuffing, and two buttons or safety eyes for the dog's facial features. The pattern also specifies the use of cleaner pipes to insert into the tail for shaping purposes.
Skill Level and Accessibility
Designed as a beginner-level knitting project, Bitzer, the dog is suitable for knitters new to toy construction. The pattern is available as a free downloadable PDF, making it accessible to crafters seeking an introductory amigurumi-style or stuffed toy knitting experience. The availability of two size options allows beginners to choose between a more manageable smaller project or a larger, more impressive finished toy.
