Product Description
Meet our knit Betta Fish. She’s cute and cuddly and looking absolutely fabulous with her beautiful fins flared out.
This Betta Fish is suitable for advanced beginner knitters and assumes an understanding of basic stitches and standard knitting terms. Our Betta Fish is knit flat and sewn together using a mattress stitch.
You will need approximately 12 m of medium weight light blue (LB) coloured yarn for the body and 22 m of medium weight dark blue (DB) coloured yarn for the fins. With this yarn, use 4 mm (US size 6) needles. You will also need a small amount of yarn for embroidering the face, stuffing (we use polyfil or wool) and a tapestry needle to sew your betta fish together. This will let you create a betta fish that’s approximately 15 cm (6 inches) in length and 13 cm (5 inches) high.
Betta Fish Knitted Toy by Two Sisters Teddy Bear Co.
What Is Being Made
The Betta Fish is a stuffed knitted toy designed by Two Sisters Teddy Bear Co. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a three-dimensional betta fish suitable for display, play, or as a handmade gift. The design encourages creative customization, allowing knitters to choose any color palette they prefer, though shades of blue and purple are suggested to reflect the natural coloring of real betta fish.
Knitting Techniques Used
This betta fish pattern employs fundamental knitting construction methods appropriate for advanced beginner knitters. The toy is knit flat, meaning it is worked in two-dimensional pieces on straight needles rather than in the round. After all pieces are completed, they are sewn together using mattress stitch, a professional seaming technique that creates nearly invisible joins between knitted sections. This approach allows for precise shaping and assembly of the fish's body, fins, and other components.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern assumes knitters have a solid understanding of basic stitches and standard knitting terms. While specific stitch abbreviations are detailed in a glossary provided within the pattern itself, the design focuses on fundamental knitting techniques rather than complex stitch patterns. This makes it accessible to advanced beginners who have mastered foundational skills like knit and purl stitches.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Betta Fish pattern offers exceptional flexibility in yarn selection. It can be knitted using aran or worsted weight yarn, both medium-weight options that create a sturdy, well-defined fabric suitable for a stuffed toy. The pattern accommodates various yarn weights with accompanying needle size adjustments—knitters typically use needles a size or two smaller than the yarn manufacturer's recommended needle size. This sizing strategy creates a tighter, more durable fabric that holds its shape effectively when stuffed. The key requirement is that all yarns used should be of similar weight to ensure the finished betta fish maintains a consistent shape and size throughout all its components. This flexibility allows crafters to use yarn from their stash or choose colors that inspire their creative vision.
Difficulty Level and Suitability
Rated as a beginner-friendly project, the Betta Fish pattern is ideal for knitters who have moved beyond absolute basics and are ready to tackle simple shaping and seaming. The pattern encourages creative exploration and customization, with the philosophy that there is no wrong answer when creating your own betta fish—only opportunities to play, explore, and discover your personal knitting style.
