Bethany Wrap by Laura Dupuis

What is Being Made

The Bethany Wrap is a knitted shawl designed by Laura Dupuis of Loyal Badger Knits. This wrap was created as a personalized gift inspired by a friend, combining thoughtful design with accessible craftsmanship. The finished piece is a versatile accessory suitable for everyday wear, crafted to showcase beautiful yarn and stitch work.

Craft and Technique Overview

This is a knitting project classified as beginner to intermediate difficulty, making it an excellent choice for knitters looking to expand their skills beyond basic stockinette stitch. The wrap incorporates fundamental knitting techniques while introducing shaping and stitch variations that create visual interest and elegant draping.

Stitches Used

The Bethany Wrap employs several essential knitting stitches to create its structure and design:

  • Knit (K) - The foundational stitch that forms the base fabric
  • Purl (P) - Used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and pattern definition
  • Yarn Over (YO) - Creates decorative eyelets and increases that add openness and visual lightness to the wrap
  • Knit Two Together (K2tog) - A right-leaning decrease that shapes the wrap and balances yarn overs
  • Slip Slip Knit (SSK) - A left-leaning decrease that provides refined shaping alongside K2tog decreases
  • Cast On (CO) - The initial stitch foundation for beginning the project
  • Slip Marker (SM) - Used to track pattern repeats and section divisions

Materials Required

The Bethany Wrap requires approximately 500 yards (460 meters) of yarn, making it an efficient project that doesn't demand excessive yardage. The pattern calls for size 1 fingering weight yarn (also known as 4-ply), which creates a delicate, refined fabric with excellent stitch definition. The sample photographed was knitted in The Blue Brickish Manitoulin Sparkle in the Condor colorway.

Essential tools and notions include:

  • Size US6/4mm circular needles, 32 inches (81 centimeters) in length, or the size required to achieve proper gauge
  • Stitch markers (2 required) to track pattern sections and repeats
  • Scissors for yarn finishing
  • Darning needle for weaving in ends and seaming if necessary
  • Beads (optional) for embellishment, applied using a bead crochet hook if desired

Design Features and Customization

The wrap's design allows for personalization through yarn selection. The fingering weight yarn weight provides excellent stitch clarity, allowing knitters to showcase the interplay of knit and purl stitches, yarn overs, and decreases. Optional bead embellishment offers additional customization for those seeking extra sparkle or texture. The circular needle construction provides flexibility in working the piece and accommodates the wrap's expanding width as it develops.

Skill Development

Knitters completing the Bethany Wrap will gain proficiency with paired decreases (K2tog and SSK), which are fundamental techniques for creating balanced, professional-looking shaping. The use of yarn overs introduces lace-like elements that add sophistication to the finished accessory. These techniques form the foundation for more complex lace and shawl patterns, making this project an excellent stepping stone for advancing knitters.
