Product Description
This is for my most requested item, the bennington capelet cowl. It's crocheted in the round with a super chunky bulky weight yarn and works up very quickly with a large size "S" crochet hook. You'll be ready to wear this in one day!
A beginner's understanding of the following stitches is necessary: Slip stitch Single crochet Double crochet DC 2tog (decrease: double crochet two stitches together) 2DC in same stitch (increase)
One size fits most. Finished Measurements: 24” from top of cowl to bottom edge. Cowl is 10” down and 23” around. Body is 14” down and 46” around without stretching. It is pictured on a size 8 dress form and as you can see it is very roomy.
In addition to the straight edge bottom, I have included instructions for a scalloped edge bottom as well. Sometimes we all need a little ruffle! Inside these instructions you may also choose to make this capelet without the cowl part - it's totally up to you!
Bennington Poncho by Barley and Flax
What is Being Made
The Bennington Poncho is a cozy capelet and cowl combination designed as a versatile layering piece. This garment features a structured capelet body worked in the round from the top down, paired with an integrated cowl created by picking up stitches around the neckline. The design combines comfort with style, making it an ideal project for those seeking a quick-to-complete accessory.
Construction and Techniques
This capelet is crocheted in the round using a top-down construction method, which allows for easy customization and fitting as you work. The cowl is created through the technique of picking up stitches around the neckline, adding a refined finishing detail to the piece. The pattern is designed to work up quickly thanks to the use of bulky yarn and oversized hooks, making it an excellent choice for crafters who want visible progress and rapid completion.
The pattern offers flexibility in yarn and hook selection. While the design is written for super chunky yarn with an extra large "S" hook, it can also be adapted using a smaller hook paired with a double strand of worsted weight yarn, or a triple strand of DK weight yarn. This adaptability means crafters can customize the final drape and weight of the garment to suit their preferences.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (SC) – the foundation stitch used throughout the pattern
- Double Crochet (DC) – used to create texture and structure
- Increases – created by crocheting two stitches into the same stitch
- Decreases – created by crocheting two stitches together
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner to beginner+ level. It uses only two fundamental stitches—Single Crochet and Double Crochet—making it accessible to newer crocheters. The increase and decrease techniques are straightforward and forgiving, involving simple stitch manipulations rather than complex shaping methods. Gauge is not critical for this project, and the pattern is intentionally designed to be flexible, allowing crafters to experiment with different yarn weights and hook sizes without compromising the final result.
Materials
This pattern calls for super chunky yarn and an extra large "S" crochet hook. The use of bulky yarn and oversized hooks contributes to the quick construction time and creates a substantial, cozy fabric. For those preferring alternative yarn weights, the pattern can be worked with worsted weight yarn (using a double strand) or DK weight yarn (using a triple strand) with a smaller hook, offering flexibility for yarn stash utilization and personal preference.
