Product Description
A very manly hat, this hat was designed with great assistance from my 12 year old son. He had very specific ideas what he wanted for his hat – Gator blue, fold-up brim, no girly designs! He even sketched and named the hat himself, and we chose the stitch pattern together.
This hat is worked in the round. This can be done on a 16" circular with dpns used for the decreases, or you can work the entire hat magic loop style.
The hat is offered three sizes – Small (18”), Medium (20”), and Large (22”) – all circumferences are unstretched.

What is Being Made
The Benlocke Hat is a masculine-styled knitted hat designed by Corrina Ferguson for PicnicKnits. This intermediate-level project creates a practical, everyday hat available in three circumference sizes: Small (18 inches), Medium (20 inches), and Large (22 inches), all measured unstretched. The design features a distinctive fold-up brim and clean aesthetic without decorative embellishments, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a straightforward yet polished finished garment.
Techniques Used
This knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques. The hat begins with a k2, p2 ribbing worked flat for 3 inches, which creates the fold-up brim structure. After the ribbed section, a set-up round prepares the stitches for the main pattern repeat. The pattern itself uses yarn-over increases and knit two together decreases to create shaping and textural interest. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, a standard construction method for crown shaping in hat knitting. Stitch markers are used to track pattern repeats and round beginnings throughout the project.
Stitches Used
The Benlocke Hat incorporates several essential knitting stitches:
- Knit stitch (k) – the primary stitch forming the fabric
- Purl stitch (p) – used in the ribbed brim and pattern sections
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase stitch used in the set-up round
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease integrated into the 16-round pattern repeat
- Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative eyelets and increases within the pattern
The main pattern section repeats over 16 rounds and can be followed using either charted or written instructions, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method of pattern reading.
Materials
The Benlocke Hat requires 150 to 200 yards of worsted weight yarn, with yardage varying by size: 150 yards for the Small size, 175 yards for the Medium size, and 200 yards for the Large size. The sample shown was knitted using Cascade 220, a popular worsted weight option. Additional materials include US Size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches and matching double-pointed needles for working the crown decreases. One removable stitch marker is needed to track pattern repeats and round beginnings. The worsted weight yarn and needle size combination creates a fabric with good stitch definition, allowing the pattern details to be clearly visible in the finished hat.
