Product Description
This is a small, felted handbag worked in three pieces: the front, the back, and the base and sides together. The front of the bag requires knitting using the intarsia method and also a little Swiss darning and chain stitching. Once sewn together this bag needs to be put through a washing machine to achieve the felted effect.
Instructions for this bag are provided in both written and charted format.
Beloved Rose Bag by Amanda (Shuttermonkey)
What is Being Made
The Beloved Rose Bag is an advanced-level knitted handbag featuring a decorative rose motif inspired by the floral design work of Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This structured bag measures 9 inches (23cm) wide by 6 inches (15cm) high, with a base depth of 4 inches (10cm) that tapers to 2.5 inches (6cm) at the top, creating a refined silhouette suitable for everyday carry or special occasions.
Design Inspiration and Context
The rose design draws directly from the aesthetic principles of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Glasgow-born architect and designer (1868–) renowned for his distinctive floral-inspired decorative motifs. Mackintosh's architectural legacy includes iconic Glasgow structures such as The Glasgow School of Art, Mrs Cranston's Tea Rooms, Scotland Street School, and Queen's Cross Church. This knitting pattern was developed with encouragement from The Yarn Cake in Glasgow and their knitwear design competition, The Glasgow School of Yarn, bringing together contemporary knitting craft with historical design influence.
Techniques and Stitches Used
As an advanced knitting project, the Beloved Rose Bag employs sophisticated techniques to render the rose motif with precision and visual impact. The pattern incorporates stranded colorwork (also known as Fair Isle knitting) to create the detailed floral design across the bag's surface. This technique requires managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously while maintaining consistent tension and stitch definition. The structured shaping—particularly the tapering from base to top—is achieved through strategic decreases that maintain the bag's architectural form. The construction likely involves seamless knitting in the round or carefully planned seaming to create the finished three-dimensional bag structure.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Beloved Rose Bag is knitted using Garnstudio DROPS Nepal yarn in aran weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for colorwork and creates a durable, structured fabric suitable for a functional accessory. The primary color is DROPS Nepal shade 0506 (Dark Grey), requiring 223 meters or 243.5 yards. Accent colors include DROPS Nepal shade 3720 (Medium Pink) at 16.5 meters or 18 yards for the rose motif, with additional yardage in a third shade for complementary design elements. Aran-weight yarn works at a standard gauge that allows for both intricate colorwork detail and efficient project completion.
Skill Level and Craftsmanship
Classified as an advanced knitting project, the Beloved Rose Bag is designed for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills. The combination of stranded colorwork, precise shaping, and structured bag construction requires proficiency in managing multiple techniques simultaneously. Knitters should be comfortable with color changes, maintaining even tension across different yarn colors, reading complex stitch patterns, and executing tailored shaping to achieve the finished dimensions and professional appearance.
