Product Description

A brilliant idea from much colder climes, these are hugely popular all across Scandinavia! Can Holder Mitts are a must for anyone who has ever held a cold can or bottle while standing outside on a very cold night! (They also work really well holding hot coffee from your favorite coffee shop!) And, you don't have to "hold" the can! The mitts do it for you.

Please Note: The patterns for these Mitts are intended to be worked in Chunky/Bulky weight yarns that call for a size 10 or 10 1/2 needle.

There are 2 different patterns included here.

The “Simple” Mitt is a very fast knit worked with a ribbed cuff and a stockinette body. This is the “traditional” Can Mitt, but with a twist, your thumb can actually hold the can unlike traditional Can Mitts!

The “Cabled” Mitt has a ribbed cuff and a cabled body.

Both mitts also have patterns for a “matching” mitt, assuming you'd like something on the hand that's not holding the can!

What Is Being Made

Because I Can, Mitt! is a set of three knitted can holder mitt designs created by Threebagsfulled, a pattern originally published by Hilary Designs in 2012. These mitts are functional accessories designed to insulate hands while holding cold beverages like cans and bottles outdoors, or hot drinks such as coffee. Unlike traditional can holders, these mittens feature an innovative thumb design that allows the thumb to actively grip the can, providing superior functionality and comfort during extended outdoor use in cold weather.

Fit and Construction Details

All three mitt patterns are designed in a One Size Fits All format with intentionally loose construction across the hand. This generous fit is essential to the design, as it prevents the can holder portion from pulling uncomfortably during use. The loose fit distinguishes these working mitts from standard fitted mittens and ensures the wearer can comfortably hold beverages for extended periods without hand fatigue or restriction.

Pattern Variations Included

The downloadable PDF contains three distinct mitt patterns, each offering different aesthetic and textural options:

  • Simple Mitt: A quick-knit option featuring a ribbed cuff paired with a stockinette stitch body. This pattern represents the traditional can mitt design enhanced with the functional thumb modification, making it ideal for knitters seeking a straightforward, fast project.
  • Cabled Mitt: This variation combines a ribbed cuff with a decorative cabled body, adding visual interest and texture to the functional design.
  • Other Mitt: Presented as a template pattern, allowing knitters to customize and create their own variations.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Because I Can, Mitt! patterns employ fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. Ribbed cuffs appear across all three designs, creating an elastic, fitted opening that keeps the mitt secure on the wrist while the loose body accommodates the can. Stockinette stitch forms the body of the Simple Mitt, producing a smooth, classic fabric. Cable stitches feature prominently in the Cabled Mitt variation, adding dimensional texture and visual complexity to the piece. These stitch combinations are worked flat or in the round depending on the knitter's preference and the pattern's construction method.

Yarn and Needle Requirements

These mittens are specifically designed to be worked in Chunky or Bulky weight yarn, which contributes to the quick-knit nature of the project and creates a substantial, insulating fabric ideal for cold-weather use. The patterns call for size 10 or 10½ knitting needles, which pair appropriately with the heavy yarn weight to create the correct gauge and fabric density. The chunky yarn choice makes this an accessible project for intermediate knitters, as the larger needles and thicker yarn allow stitches to work up quickly while remaining easy to manipulate and correct.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, Because I Can, Mitt! assumes knitters have foundational skills including casting on, basic stitch work, and binding off. The inclusion of ribbing and cable options provides appropriate complexity for this skill level without overwhelming newer knitters, while the straightforward construction and quick completion time make the pattern rewarding and encouraging.
