Be my Valentine Bear Crochet Blanket
What Is Being Made
The Be my Valentine Bear Crochet Blanket is a decorative throw blanket designed by Nezhlya gyuldzhu and created by passionatecracter.com. This project combines a cozy blanket base with charming bear motifs, making it an ideal handmade gift for Valentine's Day or year-round home décor. The blanket features bears integrated into the design, creating a whimsical and heartfelt finished piece suitable for intermediate-level crocheters.
Crochet Techniques Used
This blanket pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques to construct both the blanket foundation and the bear embellishments. Crafters will work with the magic ring method to begin circular sections, particularly for creating the bear components. The pattern utilizes post stitches, specifically back post double crochet (BPDC), which add texture and dimension to the finished blanket. Front loop only (FLO) and back loop only (BLO) techniques are incorporated to create specific stitch effects and visual interest throughout the design.
Stitches Used
The Be my Valentine Bear Blanket pattern relies on a variety of essential crochet stitches to build its structure and details:
- Single crochet (sc) – provides a tight, dense fabric base
- Half double crochet (hdc) – creates a medium-height stitch for blanket sections
- Double crochet (dc) – used extensively throughout the pattern for the primary blanket fabric
- Treble crochet (tr) – adds height and drape to certain design elements
- Decrease stitches including dc2tog (double crochet two together), dc3tog (double crochet three together), and tr3tog (treble three together) – used for shaping the bear components and creating contoured details
- Chain stitches (ch) – form the foundation rows and connect various sections
- Back post double crochet (BPDC) – creates textured ridges and dimensional effects
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, though worsted or ARAN weight yarn can be substituted depending on desired blanket size and drape. The designer used Stylecraft Special DK yarn, a 100% acrylic option offering 295 meters per 100 grams. The color palette includes white, caramel, light brown, pink, fuchsia, and red, with specific yardage requirements: 4.5 balls of white, 1 ball of light brown, 0.5 ball of caramel, 0.5 ball of red, plus small amounts of pink and fuchsia for accent details and bear features.
Essential tools include a 3.5mm crochet hook (US size E), a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, scissors, and safety eyes measuring 8mm or 6mm for the bear faces. The acrylic yarn composition makes this blanket durable, easy-care, and suitable for frequent washing.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes crocheters have foundational knowledge of basic stitches and are comfortable following multi-step instructions. The combination of decrease stitches, post stitches, and shaping techniques requires moderate skill and attention to stitch placement, making it an excellent project for crafters looking to expand their technique repertoire beyond beginner patterns.
