Bathurst Hat by Laura Chau

What Is Being Made

Bathurst is a soft and slightly slouchy knit hat designed by independent designer Laura Chau. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a double-layered fabric with visual interest through a distinctive stitch pattern. The hat is available in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) with finished circumferences ranging from 18 inches to 21.25 inches, accommodating head sizes from approximately 45.5cm to 54cm. The design is shown in size L on a 23-inch head.

Construction Method and Techniques

Bathurst employs a mixed construction approach that combines flat knitting with circular knitting. The main body of the hat is worked flat with ribbed edges and integrated buttonholes, then joined into the round to complete the crown. This hybrid technique allows for precise shaping while maintaining the integrity of the stitch pattern throughout the garment.

The crown of the hat features simple stockinette stitch with a quickly gathered crown closure, providing a clean and streamlined finish to the top of the hat. The gathered crown technique creates a neat, professional appearance while maintaining the slouchy aesthetic of the overall design.

Stitch Pattern and Fabric Construction

The signature design element of Bathurst is its embossed triangles pattern. Yarn over increases create right-angled triangles that are then pleated, resulting in a cushy and airy double-layered fabric. This stitch technique adds both textural interest and functional warmth without excessive bulk. The pleating process transforms simple yarn overs into dimensional geometric shapes, giving the hat a sophisticated, hand-crafted appearance.

The ribbed edges provide structure and help the hat maintain its shape while contributing to the overall aesthetic. The buttonholes integrated into the main body add functional detail and visual interest to the finished piece.

Yarn and Materials

Bathurst is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, though the pattern notes that Aran or heavy worsted weight yarn may also be used, offering flexibility for yarn substitution. The pattern was originally worked in Bijou Spun yarn by Bijou Basin Ranch, though any appropriate yarn weight can be substituted.

The project requires the following tools and notions:

  • US 6 / 4mm circular needles, 16 inches / 30cm long
  • US 6 / 4mm double pointed needles (or needles of choice for working small circumferences in the round)
  • 1 spare double pointed needle or cable needle for the Embossed Triangles pattern
  • 2 stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle for finishing
  • 4 buttons, 3/4 inch / 19mm in diameter

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch patterns and construction techniques. The combination of yarn over increases, pleating techniques, and mixed flat and circular knitting requires attention to detail and pattern reading ability.

Technical editing by Alexandra Virgiel ensures pattern accuracy and clarity throughout the instructions.
