Product Description
A versatile cardigan that can be worn buttoned as a pullover or open as an outer layer. The simple slip stitch colorwork uses only one color per row so there’s no hassle with floats and every other row is a “resting” row. And there is no steeking!
The easy Mosaic colorwork technique makes for a dramatic yoke with a sweet echo of the colorwork design at the cuffs and hemline. The sweater is worked top down, flat and seamless with a stockinette body and sleeves framed by ribbing.
The sample shown was worked in Shibui Birch with an (optional) additional single strand of Shibui Silk Cloud carried in the main body and sleeves for the softest and coziest fabric ever held against your skin.
Strongly contrasting colors are advised for the most dramatic effect in the yoke.
Wear this cardigan to dress up a pair of jeans for a casual look or with slacks or a skirt to the office.
Make several in different color combinations and be ready for Basketcase to become your favorite “go to” sweater!
Basketcase Cardigan by Kay Hopkins
What is Being Made
The Basketcase Cardigan is a versatile knitted cardigan designed by Kay Hopkins that functions as both a buttoned pullover and an open outer layer. This intermediate-level project features a dramatic mosaic colorwork yoke paired with a classic stockinette body, making it suitable for casual wear with jeans or professional settings with slacks or skirts. The design allows crafters to create multiple versions in different color combinations for a versatile wardrobe staple.
Construction Method
This cardigan is worked top down in a flat and seamless construction, eliminating the need for complex finishing techniques. The sweater is structured with a patterned yoke that transitions into a smooth stockinette body and sleeves. The design features ribbing that frames the stockinette sections at the cuffs and hemline, creating clean, finished edges. Notably, this pattern requires no steeking, simplifying the construction process for knitters.
Colorwork Technique
The Basketcase Cardigan employs the Mosaic colorwork technique, an accessible approach to multi-color knitting. This method uses only one color per row, eliminating the complexity of managing multiple yarn colors simultaneously and avoiding troublesome floats. Every other row serves as a "resting" row, allowing knitters to work at a comfortable pace. The colorwork creates a striking visual effect on the yoke with an echoing design detail repeated at the cuffs and hemline. Strongly contrasting colors are recommended to achieve the most dramatic and visually impactful results.
Stitches and Techniques
- Slip stitch colorwork – the primary technique for creating the mosaic pattern without managing multiple yarn colors in a single row
- Stockinette stitch – used for the body and sleeves, providing a smooth, classic fabric
- Ribbing – frames the stockinette sections at the cuffs and hemline for structure and elasticity
- Top-down flat construction – allows for seamless shaping and fitting adjustments
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Basketcase Cardigan is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, offering a refined fabric suitable for layering. The sample cardigan was knitted in Shibui Birch, a premium yarn choice. For enhanced softness and coziness, the pattern includes an optional technique of carrying an additional single strand of Shibui Silk Cloud throughout the main body and sleeves, creating an exceptionally luxurious hand feel against the skin. This optional yarn addition allows crafters to customize the fabric weight and texture based on their preferences and desired finished garment characteristics.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Basketcase Cardigan is accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore colorwork techniques. The Mosaic colorwork method's single-color-per-row approach makes it more approachable than traditional stranded colorwork, while the top-down construction provides natural shaping and fitting opportunities. This project is ideal for knitters seeking to expand their technique repertoire without overwhelming complexity.
