The sweater has some unique suede patches at the elbow and a basket stitch pattern on the hem, cuffs and saddle shoulder.
The pattern is now available for direct purchase from me.
Basket Stitch Saddle Shoulder Sweater by Natalie Smart
What is Being Made
The Basket Stitch Saddle Shoulder Sweater is an intermediate-level knitted pullover sweater designed by Natalie Smart. This garment features a distinctive saddle shoulder construction and incorporates basket stitch detailing throughout the design. The sweater is available in six sizes to fit bust measurements from 81cm to 107cm (32 to 42 inches), with finished lengths ranging from 59cm to 62cm (23 to 24.5 inches) and consistent sleeve seams of 47cm (18.5 inches).
Techniques Used
The primary construction technique featured in this design is the saddle shoulder method, which creates a distinctive yoke detail where the shoulder seams sit further back on the garment for a refined fit. The sweater employs basket stitch as a key decorative element, creating a textured, woven-like appearance across the fabric. Standard knitting techniques including shaping, seaming, and finishing are used throughout construction. The pattern also incorporates the application of suede elbow patches with pre-punched holes, adding both decorative and functional durability to high-wear areas of the sleeves.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch (st st) – the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, classic knitted surface
- Basket stitch – creates the signature textured pattern featured throughout the design
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches – fundamental stitches used in pattern construction
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires MillaMia 100% merino wool yarn in the colorway 140 Scarlet. The yarn is a 4-ply weight with approximately 125 meters per 50-gram ball. Depending on size, the sweater requires between 10 and 12 balls of yarn (500 to 600 grams total). Essential needles and tools include one pair of 3.25mm needles for the main fabric, one circular 3mm needle for ribbed edges and neckline finishing, stitch holders for managing live stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and a row counter for tracking progress through the pattern. The design is completed with two suede elbow patches measuring 11.5cm by 9cm with pre-punched holes for easy attachment.
Tension and Sizing
Correct tension is essential for this intermediate project: 25 stitches and 34 rows to 10cm over stockinette stitch using 3.25mm needles. Knitters should adjust needle size up or down as needed to achieve the specified tension, ensuring the finished garment matches the intended measurements and drape. The pattern provides detailed sizing information with six graduated sizes, allowing for customization to individual measurements.
