Basic Hat in Caron Simply Soft – Free Beginner Knitting Pattern (Downloadable PDF)
This Basic Hat knitting pattern is a wonderful introduction to hat construction for beginner knitters. Designed to fit an average woman's head, the finished hat features a classic ribbed brim that folds back into a turn-back cuff, a smooth stockinette body, a neatly shaped crown with symmetrical decreases, and a playful pompom topper. The pattern is available as a free downloadable PDF and uses Caron Simply Soft yarn, making it an accessible and satisfying project for anyone just starting out with knitting.
What Is Being Made
The pattern produces a single knitted beanie-style hat sized to fit an average woman's head. The design is clean and classic: a stretchy ribbed brim transitions into a stockinette stitch body, which is then shaped at the crown through a series of decrease rows. A Bernat Faux Fur Pompom in White Rabbit is sewn to the top of the finished hat, adding a fun, textural finishing touch. The ribbing is intentionally designed to be reversed partway through seaming so that it folds back naturally as a turn-back cuff.
Materials Used
- Yarn: Caron Simply Soft in Neon Yellow (9773) – 1 ball (6 oz / 170 g; 315 yds / 288 m). This is an aran weight yarn, offering a satisfying thickness that works up quickly and holds its shape well.
- Pompom: Bernat Faux Fur Pompom in White Rabbit (01005) – a pre-made pompom that is simply sewn to the crown of the finished hat.
- Needles: U.S. size 6 (4 mm) knitting needles for the ribbed brim, and U.S. size 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles for the body and crown, or the size needed to obtain gauge.
Gauge
The pattern calls for a gauge of 19 stitches and 25 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Checking gauge before beginning is always recommended, even for beginner projects, as it ensures the finished hat will fit correctly.
Techniques Used
- Two-needle size technique: The pattern begins on smaller needles for the ribbed brim and then switches to larger needles for the body. This is a common approach in hat knitting that creates a snug, elastic brim while allowing the body to drape and flow more comfortably.
- Ribbing: The brim is worked in K2, P2 ribbing (knit two, purl two) for approximately 6 inches (15 cm). This stretchy fabric hugs the head and folds back to form the turn-back cuff.
- Stockinette stitch: After switching to the larger needles, the body of the hat is worked in classic stockinette stitch – knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows – until the work measures 8½ inches (21.5 cm) from the beginning.
- Crown shaping with paired decreases: The crown is shaped over a series of right-side decrease rows, with wrong-side rows purled plain. Decreases are worked symmetrically using K2tog (knit two together) and ssk (slip, slip, knit) on either side of stitch sections, reducing the stitch count evenly from 98 stitches down to 18 stitches over 11 decrease rows.
- Seaming with a turn-back cuff: The back seam is sewn with the seam direction reversed halfway through the ribbing section, so that when the cuff is folded back, the seam allowance faces inward and the hat looks neat on both sides.
- Pompom attachment: The Bernat Faux Fur Pompom in White Rabbit is sewn securely to the top of the hat after the crown is gathered and fastened.
