Product Description

This basket is perfect for small desk items, such as pens and post-its, knitting supplies such as stitch markers and row counters, or cosmetics such as chapstick and a pocket mirror.

Just a note about what to store inside: don't store any scissors in it, just because the knitting could accidentally be cut. That wouldn't be good! The baskets fold up easily and can be stored in small spaces when not in use.

I used Lion Brand Thick and Quick Wool-Ease but any super bulky yarn can be used, really. You can use 9 or 10 mm knitting needles for the basket. It kind of depends on how quickly you want it to work up. It will go a lot quicker with 10 mm needles!

You also will need a large tapestry/yarn needle and scissors.

Project Overview

The Basic Bubble Basket is a free knitting pattern designed to create a practical container perfect for organizing small desk items, knitting supplies, and personal accessories. This straightforward project can be completed in approximately one hour, making it an ideal choice for knitters seeking a quick and satisfying make.

What You'll Create

This pattern produces a small, functional basket suitable for storing pens, post-its, stitch markers, row counters, chapstick, and pocket mirrors. The basket's compact size and sturdy construction make it versatile for both craft room organization and everyday desk use.

Knitting Techniques

The Basic Bubble Basket employs several fundamental knitting techniques that work together to shape the container. The pattern begins by working flat on straight needles before transitioning to circular needles and double-pointed needles to complete the project in the round. This transition from flat to circular knitting is a valuable skill-building element for intermediate knitters.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch: The foundation of the basket, worked flat for the initial rows using alternating knit and purl rows
  • Knit Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the circular sections
  • Kfb (Knit Front and Back): An increase stitch used to expand the basket's circumference
  • K2tog (Knit Two Together): A decrease stitch employed to shape and close the basket's opening and base

Materials Required

The pattern calls for super bulky yarn, with Lion Brand Bubble Wool-Ease Thick & Quick specified as the designer's choice. This yarn weight creates a dense, sturdy fabric ideal for a functional container. Needle requirements include 9mm (US 13) straight needles for the flat sections, a 9mm (US 13) circular needle measuring slightly longer than 12 inches for working in the round, and four 9mm (US 13) double-pointed needles for the final decreasing rounds.

Pattern Structure

The construction begins with casting on 30 stitches and working four rows of stockinette stitch in a flat knit-purl rhythm. The work then transitions to a circular needle where stitches are joined in the round. An increase round using the kfb technique expands the stitch count to 35, followed by six rounds of stockinette worked in the round. The basket is then shaped with strategic decreases: first reducing to 18 stitches, then to 9 stitches, before final closure. This structured decrease sequence creates the basket's tapered sides and closed base.
