Product Description
I designed this set of matching balaclavas for my German "step daughter" and her dog. I marred both our cultures by combining the traditional Irish "Aran bobble & cable" design with a 19th Century German "Lochstreifen" (or "hole strip") sock lace pattern in the human hat. For the dog version I combined a German open cable with a central eyelet hole combined with the same bobble pattern.

What is Being Made
The Ballaclamhagh Balaclava is a knitted balaclava design available in two versions: a human-sized hat and a matching dog-sized hat. This project combines traditional European knitting heritage with practical cold-weather headwear, featuring a full-coverage design that protects the head, neck, and face. The balaclava is designed to be worn as a complete head covering with openings for the face and ears.
Design Inspiration and Cultural Elements
Created by designer Anja Sammon of Julchen Knits, this balaclava merges two distinct traditional knitting patterns with regional German headwear traditions. The design draws inspiration from Irish Aran knitting with its characteristic cable and bobble textures, combined with the 19th Century traditional German "Lochstreifen" lace pattern from Pölling in Bavaria, which translates to "hole strip" in the pattern. The pompom detail references traditional headwear designs from Hessian, Germany, adding an authentic regional touch to the finished hat.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Ballaclamhagh Balaclava employs several advanced knitting techniques to achieve its textured and patterned appearance. Cable knitting creates the raised, twisted rope-like textures characteristic of Aran patterns, while bobble stitches add three-dimensional texture and visual interest throughout the design. Lace knitting with yarn overs and decreases incorporates the traditional Lochstreifen pattern, creating decorative "hole strips" that add delicate openwork details. The design cleverly translates two-dimensional colour work concepts into textured stitches, allowing for visual complexity without the need for traditional stranded colourwork techniques.
Stitch Details
- Ribbing: Used at the neck opening to create elasticity and a secure fit
- Stockinette stitch: Forms the smooth base fabric for the head portion of the human hat
- Cable stitches: Create the raised, twisted textures inspired by Irish Aran traditions
- Bobble stitches: Add three-dimensional embellishment and texture
- Lace stitches: Incorporate yarn overs and decreases for the traditional Lochstreifen pattern
Construction and Structure
The human-sized balaclava features a two-layer construction with an upper decorative fabric and an integrated lining to provide insulation and withstand cold weather conditions. The lining includes ribbing at the neck for secure fit and stockinette stitch for the head area, creating a smooth, comfortable interior surface against the skin. The dog-sized version is constructed as a single-layer hat, designed to be lightweight and easy for small dogs to wear comfortably without excess bulk.
Yarn and Materials
This project is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for displaying the intricate cable, bobble, and lace pattern work. The 4-ply weight offers a balance between drape and structure, making it suitable for both the textured patterning and the practical insulation needed in a cold-weather balaclava. The yarn choice allows the traditional pattern details to be clearly visible while maintaining the garment's functionality.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced in difficulty, reflecting the complexity of combining multiple traditional knitting techniques. Knitters working on the Ballaclamhagh Balaclava should be comfortable with cable knitting, bobble stitch construction, lace knitting with yarn overs and decreases, and working with stitch patterns that require careful attention to pattern repeats and stitch counts. The integration of multiple pattern types and the two-layer construction of the human version add to the overall complexity of the project.
Format and Availability
The Ballaclamhagh Balaclava is available as a free downloadable PDF pattern from Julchen Knits, designed by Anja Sammon. This format allows knitters to access the complete instructions, stitch patterns, and sizing information digitally, making it convenient for modern crafters to begin their project immediately.
