Ball Cap His and Hers #261 by Meadowvale Studio

What Is Being Made

This is an original crochet design from Meadowvale Studio for a unisex baseball-style cap available in multiple sizes. The pattern, designated #261, creates fitted baseball caps suitable for both men and women, with sizing options ranging from preemie through adult extra-large. The design is titled "His & Hers" to emphasize its versatility across genders and age groups.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern provides comprehensive sizing instructions based on head circumference measurements rather than age, ensuring a proper fit across all wearers. Available sizes include:

  • Preemie: 12–13 inches (30.5–33 cm)
  • Newborn: 14–15 inches (35.5–38 cm)
  • Baby: 16–17 inches (40.5–43 cm)
  • Child: 18–19 inches (45.5–48 cm)
  • Teen/Adult Small: 20–21 inches (50.5–53.5 cm)
  • Adult Medium: 22–23 inches (56–58.5 cm)
  • Adult Large: 24–25 inches (61–63.5 cm)
  • Adult Extra-Large: 26–27 inches (66–68.5 cm)

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for medium worsted weight yarn (weight #4) in quantities of 100–200 grams depending on the size being made. A 5 mm crochet hook (USA G/8 or Britain 6) is the primary tool required. For creating a preemie size, crafters should substitute DK weight yarn (weight #3) with a 4.5 mm crochet hook instead.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques

This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs fundamental stitches and shaping techniques. The core stitches used throughout the cap include:

  • Chain (CH): The foundation stitch used to begin the pattern
  • Single Crochet (SC): Applied in specific sections, particularly around the forehead area of the cap for structure and definition
  • Half Double Crochet (HDC): The primary stitch used to build the body and crown of the cap
  • Slip Stitch (SS): Employed to join rounds and create seamless transitions throughout the construction

Shaping Methods

The pattern incorporates two essential shaping techniques to create the three-dimensional baseball cap form:

  • Increase (INC): Accomplished by working 2 stitches into the same stitch to expand the fabric and create the crown's rounded shape
  • Decrease (DEC): Created by combining 2 stitches into 1 stitch to reduce stitches and shape the cap's structure

Construction Method

The cap is constructed using a circular construction method beginning with either a traditional chain ring or a magic ring foundation. The pattern starts by creating a ring, then working half double crochet stitches into the center to establish the crown. A distinctive feature of this pattern is that stitches are worked into the spaces between stitches throughout most of the cap, except during slip stitches at round endings and single crochet rounds at the forehead section. This technique creates a refined fabric texture and allows for precise shaping. The pattern progresses outward from the crown, using increases to expand the cap to the desired head circumference, then transitions to the bill and forehead sections.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and comfortable working in the round. The pattern requires understanding of stitch placement variations and the ability to follow sizing modifications.
