Baertling Blanket by Caneline

What is Being Made

The Baertling Blanket is a knitted throw blanket measuring 90 x 70cm (35 x 27.5 inches). This is a single-size project designed as a cozy, colorful blanket suitable for various uses, from home décor to gifting. The blanket features a striking geometric color-blocking design created through strategic yarn color changes during the knitting process.

Techniques Used

This blanket employs intarsia knitting techniques, a method where different colored yarns are used to create distinct color blocks within the fabric. The pattern uses a progressive color transition method, gradually introducing new yarn colors across rows while maintaining the knit structure. Knitters work with multiple yarn colors simultaneously, switching between them at designated points to build the geometric design. This technique requires careful attention to yarn management to prevent tangling and ensure clean color transitions throughout the piece.

Stitches Used

The Baertling Blanket is constructed primarily using knit stitches, the fundamental stitch in knitting. The pattern notation uses standard abbreviations: K represents knit stitch, and the pattern includes instances of knitting stitches together in different colors to create smooth color transitions. The straightforward stitch structure makes this an accessible project for beginner knitters, despite the color-work complexity.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino in sport weight (50g balls): 2 balls in Pumpkin (Color A), 3 balls in Midnight (Color B), 2 balls in Snow (Color C), 2 balls in Seaside (Color D), and 2 balls in Storm (Color E). Total yardage spans approximately 550 yards across all colors.
  • Needles: 3.25mm circular knitting needles for working the blanket
  • Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends

Gauge and Specifications

The pattern specifies a gauge of 25 stitches and 34 rows to 10cm (4 inches) when worked in stockinette stitch. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The blanket begins with a cast-on of 141 stitches in the primary color, establishing the foundation for the color-blocking design that develops across subsequent rows.
