Baby Whirl Blanket by Aimee Lynne Designs

Project Overview

The Baby Whirl Blanket is a crochet blanket pattern designed by Aimee Lynne Designs, creating a finished blocked size of 36x36 inches. This intermediate-level project is ideal for crocheters with some experience who want to create a beautiful, textured throw blanket suitable for babies and small spaces.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a square blanket measuring 36 by 36 inches when blocked. The blanket is constructed using a circular starting point that expands outward, creating a whirled or spiral effect that gives the design its distinctive name and visual appeal.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Baby Whirl Blanket employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques:

  • Magic ring construction for starting the center of the blanket
  • Circular crochet worked in rounds that expand progressively
  • Post stitches, specifically back post double crochet (bpdc), which create texture and dimension
  • Popcorn stitch as a special stitch element, made by creating 5 double crochets in the same stitch, removing the hook, inserting it into the first of the 5 stitches, and pulling the last stitch through to create a bobbled, three-dimensional effect
  • Blocking to achieve the final square dimensions and even tension

Crochet Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes a focused selection of crochet stitches appropriate for intermediate crafters:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and spacing
  • Slip stitch (slst) – used to join rounds
  • Single crochet (sc) – provides tight, dense fabric
  • Half double crochet (hdc) – offers medium height and drape
  • Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch used throughout most of the pattern
  • Back post double crochet (bpdc) – creates textured ridges by working around the post of stitches from previous rows
  • Popcorn stitch – a specialty stitch that adds dimensional bobbles to the blanket surface

Materials and Tools

Crochet Hook: The pattern calls for an F/5 hook, which measures 3.75mm in diameter. This size works well with the recommended yarns to achieve the proper gauge.

Gauge: The first 7 rows of the pattern should measure 6.5 inches. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished blanket reaches the intended 36x36 inch dimensions.

Yarn Options: The primary yarn recommendation is Scheepjes Whirl, a premium yarn line. The pattern specifies 1 skein of Scheepjes Whirl Melting Macaron (1000 meters) combined with 1 skein of Scheepjes Whirlette Bubble (455 meters), totaling approximately 1455 meters of yarn. An alternative option is 2 skeins of Yarn Bee Rainbow Wrapsody. Both options work with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, offering flexibility for yarn substitution while maintaining appropriate drape and finished dimensions.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable following multi-row instructions with special stitches like popcorn and post stitches. The circular construction and expanding round structure require attention to pattern notes and stitch counts.

Pattern Structure Notes

The pattern begins with a magic ring foundation and works in joined rounds. The chain at the beginning of each round counts as a stitch. The pattern uses parenthetical notation to indicate consecutive row numbers for repeating sections, with counts given per side rather than for the whole round, helping crafters track their progress through the expanding design.
