In wanting to keep my own 1 year own warm during the colder weather, I designed a cowl/snood for her to wear. A simple cable repeat pattern that fits neatly around the openning of her coat. I've buttoned it so that it doesn't have to go over her head! And chosen a soft wool so that it's not scratchy next to her skin. It's been a great big success. It can be made wider and longer, if desired for older children.
