Product Description
The Baby Ribbed Shoulder Sweater is crocheted top-down with very minimal seaming. The only seaming is at the ribbing! Some testers reported simply slip stitching the ribbing together for an adorable sweater with no seaming at all. This works up so quickly using this method and makes a great gift!

What Is Being Made
The Baby Ribbed Shoulder Sweater is a crocheted pullover garment designed for infants ranging from 3 to 24 months old. The finished chest measurements are available in five sizes: 18.5 inches, 20 inches, 21 inches, 22.5 inches, and 25 inches. This sweater features a distinctive construction method that begins at the shoulders with ribbed saddle pieces, creating a unique structural element that defines the garment's silhouette and provides a comfortable fit for babies.
Construction Technique
This sweater employs a top-down construction method, which allows for easy fitting adjustments and a seamless building process. The pattern begins by crocheting two ribbed saddle pieces that sit at the shoulders. The back section is then worked across these saddles up to the armholes. The front piece is worked separately to the armholes, and then all pieces are joined together. This approach minimizes seaming work, as the sleeves are crocheted directly around the armhole edges, leaving only the ribbing portions to be seamed together at the end.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
The Baby Ribbed Shoulder Sweater utilizes fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners:
- Single Crochet (sc): The primary stitch used throughout the sweater, creating a dense, durable fabric
- Back Loop Only (blo): A special technique worked into the back loop only of indicated stitches, which creates the characteristic ribbed texture, particularly in the saddle sections and contributing to the sweater's visual interest and elasticity
- Chain (ch): Used to create the foundation for the saddle pieces and for turning chains throughout the pattern
The back loop only technique is essential to achieving the ribbed effect that gives this sweater its name and distinctive appearance. This stitch variation creates vertical lines of texture that add both visual appeal and functional stretch to the garment.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Red Heart Baby Hugs in worsted weight, a medium-weight yarn specifically formulated for baby garments. The pattern calls for one skein each of two colorways: Sky (main color) and Frosting (contrasting color), allowing for creative color blocking or accent possibilities.
Hooks: The pattern requires two different crochet hook sizes. The larger US size L/11 (8.0 mm) hook is used for the main body of the sweater, while the smaller US size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook is used for the saddle pieces, which creates the ribbed texture through tighter gauge work.
Additional Notions: A yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends and seaming the ribbed sections together.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 12 stitches and 16 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when working single crochet with the larger hook. Maintaining proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements and ensuring the sweater fits appropriately for the intended baby size.
Skill Level
This sweater is rated as Easy and Beginner-friendly, making it an excellent project for those new to crochet or those seeking a straightforward garment construction. The pattern uses only basic stitches and a logical construction sequence that builds confidence while creating a wearable, professional-looking baby garment.
