Product Description
I started by knitting the adult version of this and I decided that it would be fun to knit one for a baby. I used the colours specified in the pattern but you could easily choose alternative ones from the wonderful range of UK Alpaca colours. Decide on your main colours first and then knit the hat and bootees in your favourite ones. I have used a DK Alpaca but this could be substituted for any DK standard guage yarn. The cardigan is knitted in a stocking stitch.
Baby Highland Dreams Cardigan, Hat and Bootees by Monica Russel
Overview
Baby Highland Dreams is a downloadable knitting pattern collection designed by Monica Russel, featuring three coordinated pieces for newborns through 18 months: a colorful cardigan, matching hat, and bootees. This intermediate-level knitting project uses DK weight yarn and creates a charming, multi-colored set perfect for gifting or personal use.
What is Being Made
- Baby Cardigan: A sized cardigan available in newborn, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, and 12-18 months, with lengths ranging from 20cm to 29cm and widths from 22cm to 29cm
- Matching Hat: A coordinating hat designed to complement the cardigan
- Bootees: A pair of small booties to complete the three-piece set
Knitting Techniques Used
The pattern employs stranded colorwork techniques to create the distinctive multi-colored design. The cardigan features repeating color blocks worked in stocking stitch (alternating knit and purl rows), with strategic color changes throughout the construction. The pattern uses knit through back of loops (KTBL) for specific stitches, and knit two together (K2tog) for shaping. Sleeve lengths vary from 12cm to 21cm depending on size.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Stocking Stitch (ST): The primary stitch pattern, consisting of one row knit followed by one row purl, creating a smooth V-textured fabric
- Knit (K) and Purl (P): Foundation stitches used throughout
- Knit Through Back of Loops (KTBL): Specialized knit stitch for texture variation
- Knit Two Together (K2tog): Decrease stitch for shaping
- Color Blocking: Multiple color changes (Damson, Mustard, and other designated colors) create distinct horizontal stripes and pattern sections
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires DK weight yarn in multiple colors. The cardigan in Colour F uses Damson (1-2 balls depending on size) and Colour G uses Mustard (1 ball). Additional colors designated as A, C, D, and E are worked throughout the pattern. Knitting needles required are 4.5mm (UK size 7; US size 7) single-pointed needles.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a tension of 31 rows by 21 stitches over 10 centimeters in stocking stitch. Maintaining proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements across all four size options.
Pattern Structure
The cardigan construction follows a systematic color-blocking approach, with rows organized into distinct sections. The pattern alternates between stocking stitch rows in different colors, with purl rows beginning each new color section. This creates a structured, multi-striped appearance. Row counts progress sequentially from row 3 through row 38 in the documented section, demonstrating the methodical construction approach suitable for intermediate knitters.
