Product Description
I can't resist watching baby elephants in nature documentaries, with their stubby trunks that they're just learning to use, and their oversized ears. When I designed this pattern I wanted to come up with something realistic, but still quite simple. I also wanted to reduce the amount of sewing, so the legs are worked as you go along. This means that you don't have to worry about where to position them, and they form a more natural shape with the body. The pattern is written using US crochet terms, and the list of abbreviations includes the UK alternatives.
You will need approx 25g double knitting weight yarn in grey or blue, or any colour you choose.
Finished size: approximately 8 cm (3") tall, 13 cm (5") long.
Baby Elephant Amigurumi by Lucy Collin
What Is Being Made
This is a downloadable crochet pattern for a Baby Elephant Amigurumi, a small stuffed toy designed by independent designer Lucy Collin. The finished amigurumi measures approximately 8 cm (3 inches) tall and 13 cm (5 inches) long, making it an ideal size for a decorative toy or gift. The design captures the charm of baby elephants with realistic proportions, including characteristic stubby trunks and oversized ears, while maintaining a simple construction suitable for intermediate crocheters.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This amigurumi pattern employs several key crochet techniques to create a cohesive finished piece. The designer has incorporated an innovative legs-as-you-go method, which means the legs are worked directly into the body during construction rather than being sewn on afterward. This approach eliminates guesswork about leg placement, ensures natural shaping where the legs meet the body, and significantly reduces the amount of finishing work required. The pattern uses standard amigurumi construction with stuffing to create a three-dimensional, cuddly toy.
Stitches and Crochet Details
While the specific stitch-by-stitch instructions are contained within the downloadable PDF pattern, the Baby Elephant Amigurumi uses fundamental crochet stitches typical of amigurumi construction. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that the pattern includes increases, decreases, and shaping techniques beyond basic single crochet, likely incorporating methods such as invisible decreases for seamless shaping and strategic increases to form the elephant's distinctive body, head, ears, and trunk.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The pattern calls for approximately 25 grams of double knitting (DK) weight yarn in grey or blue, though any colour can be substituted according to personal preference. The designer suggests Sirdar Country Style Wool Blend DK as a yarn option. Worsted weight yarn, which is slightly thicker than DK, can be easily substituted if needed; however, you may require a bit more yardage and should consider going up one hook size to maintain proper proportions.
Additional materials required include:
- 3.5mm crochet hook (US E hook size)
- Polyester fibrefill or toy stuffing for filling the amigurumi
- 1 pair of 7.5mm black safety eyes for the elephant's face
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and any necessary finishing details
Skill Level and Suitability
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is well-suited for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable with shaping techniques. The innovative legs-as-you-go construction method demonstrates thoughtful pattern design that reduces complexity while maintaining a professional finished appearance, making it an engaging project for those looking to expand their amigurumi skills.
