What is Being Made

Ayla is a knitted sweater designed by Quail Studio and featured in MODE at Rowan. This pattern offers versatility with three neckline options: a classic crew neck, a high neck style, and a V-neck design. The sweater is available in nine sizes ranging from 71-76 cm (28-30 inches) chest to 152-157 cm (60-62 inches) chest, accommodating a wide range of body measurements. The actual chest measurements of the finished garment range from 89 cm (35 inches) to 169 cm (66½ inches), providing a selection of fit options from close-fitting to more relaxed silhouettes.

Yarn and Materials

Yarn: Rowan Alpaca Haze in sport weight (25 gram balls). The pattern requires between 5 and 9 balls depending on size selected. The photographed samples showcase the yarn in three colorways: Cocoa 016 for the crew neck version, Peony 017 for the high neck version, and Jasmine 014 for the V-neck version.

Needles and Notions: One pair of 3mm (US 2.5) needles are required for this project. Additional supplies include stitch holders and a stitch marker for managing stitches during construction.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Ayla is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for knitters with some experience. The pattern uses stockinette stitch (abbreviated as st st) as the primary fabric, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic knit texture.

The pattern incorporates ribbed edging, worked in alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1 ribbing) to create stretchy, fitted edges that help the garment maintain its shape. Shaping techniques include decreases using purl two together (P2tog) to reduce stitch counts at strategic points during construction, allowing the sweater to fit the body contours properly.

The neckline options require different finishing approaches: the crew neck, high neck, and V-neck versions each present distinct construction methods for the neck opening and finishing. The pattern uses cast on and cast off techniques to begin and complete the knitted pieces.

Tension and Finished Measurements

The pattern is worked to a tension of 26 stitches and 32 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using 3mm (US 2.5) needles.
