Ava – Slouchy Hat with Flower by Julie Taylor
What Is Being Made
The Ava is a slouchy hat featuring an attached decorative flower, designed by Julie Taylor. This pattern creates a relaxed, comfortable hat with a generous crown that drapes softly, paired with a charming floral embellishment. The slouchy silhouette is achieved through the hat's construction and shaping, making it a stylish accessory suitable for various occasions and seasons.
Craft and Construction Methods
This is a knitting pattern classified as beginner-level, making it an excellent choice for those new to knitting or looking for a quick project. The pattern offers flexibility in construction methods, allowing knitters to choose between two approaches:
- Knitting in the round: Uses double pointed needles (dpns) throughout, or alternatively, a circular needle can be used for the main body with a switch to dpns for the final decrease rounds
- Knitting flat on two needles: An option for those who prefer traditional flat knitting methods, with seaming required at the end
This flexibility makes the pattern accessible to knitters with different skill levels and equipment preferences.
Stitches and Techniques
While specific stitch details are referenced in the pattern, the design employs standard knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The pattern includes decrease rounds to shape the crown of the hat, creating the characteristic slouchy fit. The flower component is a separate element that is attached to the finished hat, adding visual interest and dimension to the design.
Yarn and Materials
The Ava pattern is designed for super bulky yarn (weight category 5-6 wpi), which contributes to the quick knitting time and beginner-friendly nature of the project. The original sample was created using Wendy Serenity Super Bulky yarn in two shades: Chalk (shade 1701) for the main hat and Tarmac (shade 1706) for the flower.
Additional yarn suggestions compatible with this pattern include:
- Wool-Ease Thick and Quick
- Rowan Sweet Harmony
- Any super bulky yarn that knits to the correct tension specified in the pattern
The pattern requires double pointed needles or circular needles depending on the chosen construction method. The use of super bulky yarn means fewer stitches and rows are needed, resulting in a fast, satisfying project that can be completed quickly.
