Product Description
My husband and I managed to escape for a few days during a very hectic period of home renovations. I began this shawl and could feel the calm settling in deeper with each row. Although we were not in an Auberge I could close my eyes and imagine that I was and soon the throaty voice of Chris Rea started to fill my head as well. Now that Auberge is complete I need just to run my fingers over the soft yarn to be transported to a place of peace.
Auberge is a crescent shawl knit from hem up. The lace pattern is set against a reverse stockinette background and along with garter stitch it is perfect for a subtle variegated or a kettle dyed yarn.
This shawl is knit on one long circular needle to accommodate the large number of stitches. Because the short rows are worked in the garter stitch section there is no need to wrap and turn the stitches before turning. Auberge can easily be adapted to be made smaller or larger by adding additional repeats. Instructions are included
Auberge Crescent Shawl by SashkaKnits
What Is Being Made
Auberge is a crescent-shaped shawl designed by Sashka Macievich and published by SashkaKnits. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a finished shawl measuring 67 inches (170 cm) long by 14.5 inches (37 cm) wide at the centre. The crescent silhouette makes it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.
Construction Method
The shawl is knit from hem up, meaning you begin at the bottom edge and work upward toward the top. The design features a lace pattern set against a reverse stockinette background, creating visual contrast between the decorative lace sections and the smooth, recessed ground. Garter stitch is incorporated alongside stockinette stitch to provide structure and definition to the overall piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern requires intermediate knitting skills and familiarity with the following techniques:
- Decreases: Including ssk (slip, slip, knit) and k2tog (knit two together), as well as double decreases for shaping
- Increases: Yarn overs (yo) for creating decorative lace holes and shaping the crescent form
- Basic lace stitches: Yarn overs combined with decreases to form the lace pattern
- Stockinette stitch: The primary ground stitch providing a smooth, V-textured fabric
- Reverse stockinette stitch: Used as the background against which the lace pattern is showcased
- Garter stitch: Incorporated for structural support and textural variety
Materials and Tools Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for Malabrigo Sock yarn in colourway 854, Rayon Vert. This yarn is a blend suitable for fine, delicate shawlwork. The pattern specifies 2 skeins of Malabrigo Sock (100 grams / 3.5 ounces per skein, 440 yards / 400 metres per skein). The designer notes that 180 grams were used for the sample shawl, so yarn requirements may vary slightly depending on individual gauge and tension. For those substituting yarn, purchasing an extra skein is recommended, or alternatively casting on fewer repeats if concerned about yardage.
Needles: US size 2.5 (3.00 mm) circular knitting needles, minimum 16 inches (40 cm) long, or the size required to achieve correct gauge. Circular needles are used even though this is not a seamless in-the-round project, as they accommodate the increasing number of stitches as the shawl expands.
Additional supplies: 18 stitch markers (optional but helpful for tracking pattern repeats), and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge and Yarn Characteristics
The pattern specifies a gauge of 26 stitches and 44 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in the ground stitch. The designer notes that gauge is not critical in this shawl pattern, making it forgiving for knitters who may not match the exact gauge precisely. The pattern is designed to showcase subtle variegated or kettle-dyed yarns beautifully, as the lace and reverse stockinette background allow the yarn's colour variations to shine through without overwhelming the stitch definition.
