What Is Being Made
The Astrup Vig is a downloadable knitting pattern for a women's top designed by HelstrupDesign. This intermediate-level garment is available in six sizes ranging from S to XXXL, with finished chest widths from 100 to 140 centimeters and lengths from 64 to 71 centimeters. The pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to work with lace techniques and multiple needle sizes.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Astrup Vig incorporates two primary knitting techniques to create visual interest and structure. Lace knitting forms a decorative element worked on 3 mm needles, creating an openwork pattern that adds elegance to the finished garment. Garter stitch, worked on smaller 2½ mm needles, provides textured sections and helps define the garment's shaping. The combination of these techniques at different gauges allows for both decorative and structural elements within a single design.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern relies on foundational knitting stitches executed at specific gauges to achieve proper fit. The lace pattern worked on 3 mm needles is worked to a gauge of 25 stitches and 32 rows per 10 by 10 centimeters. The garter stitch sections on 2½ mm needles are worked to a gauge of 28 stitches and 50 rows per 10 by 10 centimeters. Accurate gauge is emphasized as essential, since every knitter's gauge is unique and proper sizing depends on matching the recommended gauges.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Astrup Vig pattern calls for sport-weight yarn in either cotton or wool fibers. Recommended yarn options include Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino or Roma from Hjertegarn, both at 125 meters per 50 grams. Yarn quantities range from 400 to 700 grams depending on size, with the size XL pictured worked in 100% cotton.
The pattern requires multiple circular needles in two sizes to accommodate different sections of the garment. Knitters will need one 2½ mm circular needle measuring 60 centimeters, one 2½ mm circular needle measuring 40 centimeters (or alternatively 2½ mm double-pointed needles), one 3 mm circular needle measuring 60 centimeters, and one 3 mm circular needle measuring 40 centimeters (or alternatively 3 mm double-pointed needles). Additional notions include stitch markers and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
