Product Description

Asrai are small delicate fairies that melt away in the sunlight or water. I'd guess that this is an intermediate level pattern, but a good introduction to using lace weight yarns as dk sections give you a bit of a break from the lace :) This is a long rectangular stole. Delicate and beautiful, perfect for throwing over your shoulders to dress up an outfit or to provide just a little extra warmth across your shoulders. The contrast between the lace and the dk weight yarns provides the delicacy seen in this stole. It uses about 460yds/420mts of dk weight yarn and 250yds/220mts of lace weight, I used matching colours but it looks equally beautiful in contrasting colours as well.

Asrai has been tested by the wonderful testers in [The Happy Hookers Hangout.][2]

This pattern has been tech edited by the wonderful (and patient) [boricuacrochet][3] who can be found here on Ravelry if you are in need of a tech editor.

Asrai Fairy Stole by Sarahjanedesigns

What is Being Made

The Asrai Fairy Stole is a long rectangular crocheted wrap designed to be draped over the shoulders. Measuring 58 inches in length and 11 inches in width, this stole combines delicate construction with practical wearability. Inspired by Asrai—small, delicate fairies from folklore that dissolve in sunlight or water—this design captures an ethereal aesthetic while serving as both a decorative fashion accessory and a lightweight layer for added warmth across the shoulders.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level crochet project employs a thoughtful combination of yarn weights and stitch techniques to achieve its delicate appearance. The pattern utilizes a strategic yarn weight transition, beginning with a DK weight yarn for the foundation and body of the stole, then transitioning to a laceweight yarn to create an intricate, airy lace section. This layering of yarn weights allows the designer to build structure and drape while introducing decorative lace elements that enhance the fairy-inspired aesthetic.

Stitches Used

The Asrai Fairy Stole incorporates several fundamental crochet stitches to build its structure and visual interest:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation chains and decorative spacing throughout the pattern
  • Single crochet (sc) – provides dense, stable fabric for foundational rows
  • Half double crochet (hdc) – creates a medium-weight fabric used as the primary stitch for gauge measurement and body construction
  • Double crochet (dc) – introduces height and openness, particularly in the lace sections

The pattern instructions note that rows are repeated with variations, and a yarn weight change occurs mid-project to transition from the structured DK weight sections to the delicate laceweight finale.

Materials and Specifications

The Asrai Fairy Stole requires a total of 710 yards of yarn (460 yards of DK weight plus 250 yards of laceweight), all sourced from 100% extra fine merino available through Colourmart. The DK weight yarn is specified as 10/28 count, while the laceweight provides the delicate finishing sections. A 4.5mm (size 7) crochet hook is required to achieve the correct tension and gauge.

Gauge and Tension

Correct gauge is essential for this project's success. Using the DK weight yarn with a 4.5mm hook and half double crochet stitch, the pattern requires 14 stitches and 12 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches). The pattern instructions emphasize that achieving proper tension is critical to creating a stole with the intended drape, dimensions, and delicate appearance.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Asrai Fairy Stole is suitable for crocheters with foundational stitch knowledge and experience working with multiple yarn weights. The pattern's complexity stems from the yarn weight transition mid-project and the coordination of various stitch heights to create the intended lace effects, rather than from advanced techniques.
