Product Description
Armour Road is one of the main routes running north-south through the eastern side of Peterborough, Ontario. It carries major traffic, connects bus routes from the ‘East City’ up to the University campus, and intersects with the recreational walking and cycling trail which, for the adventurous, could carry you as far as the small town of Lakefield north of the city.
It’s a street with a lot to get done in a day, and so do your feet! These socks blend elegant lines of twisted stitches with cozy comfort. Worked up in Tanis Fiber Arts Yellow Label DK – or your preferred DK superwash wool – these will be a quick knit for your feet. Wear them around the house in place of slippers on cooler days, or keep them on hand for your active jaunts outside.
These socks are the fifth pattern of eight, and the second of the March releases in the Urban Collection!
With many thanks to Kate Atherley for technical editing, Jane D. for photography, and Austen Gilliand for modelling.
Armour Road Socks by GlennaC
What is Being Made
Armour Road Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by GlennaC as part of the Urban Collection, Winter-to-Spring 2012. These socks are crafted to provide both elegant style and everyday comfort, suitable for wearing around the house as an alternative to slippers on cooler days or for active outdoor pursuits. The design draws inspiration from Armour Road, a major north-south route through Peterborough, Ontario, reflecting the busy, purposeful nature of the street in the sock's construction.
Techniques Used
The primary knitting technique featured in these socks is the use of twisted stitches, which create elegant linear patterns throughout the design. Twisted stitches involve working into the back loop of stitches rather than the front loop, producing a subtle but visually distinctive texture. This technique adds sophistication to the sock while maintaining the practicality needed for a garment designed for regular wear. The combination of twisted stitch work with standard knitting creates a balanced blend of visual interest and comfort.
Stitches Used
While the pattern emphasizes twisted stitches as the primary decorative element, the socks are worked using fundamental knitting stitches. The gauge specification of 24 stitches over 40 rows indicates the density of stitches used throughout the project, which is typical for DK-weight yarn knitting. The exact stitch sequence and pattern repeats are detailed in the full downloadable PDF pattern.
Materials
- Yarn: Tanis Fiber Arts Yellow Label DK weight, or any preferred DK superwash wool. DK (Double Knit) weight yarn is a medium-weight option that knits relatively quickly while providing durability and comfort for sock wear.
- Needles: Appropriate needles for DK-weight yarn in the size required to achieve the specified gauge of 24 stitches per 40 rows.
- Notions: Standard sock knitting supplies as indicated in the complete pattern materials list.
Difficulty Level
Armour Road Socks are rated as an intermediate knitting project. This difficulty level reflects the incorporation of twisted stitches, which require attention to technique, while remaining accessible to knitters who have mastered basic sock construction. The pattern is described as a quick knit, making it an efficient project for experienced knitters seeking a satisfying finished object in a reasonable timeframe.
