Product Description
Ardisia is a right-angle triangle shawl inspired by the marlberry plant that carries vibrant droplet-like berries. Worked in a rustic sport-weight yarn, the shawl features two distinct stitch patterns: a twining rib that looks like cables (but isn’t!) and scattered droplets made with dip stitches.
The shawl is worked on the bias with increases always placed along the same edge. The other two edges remain straight throughout the entire shawl. The shawl is framed with an i-cord edging that gives it a finished look. Tassels attached to each of the three corners add to the rustic charm.
The shawl size can easily be modified by working more or fewer pattern repeats. The pattern is written with both metric and US terminology. Both written and charted instructions are provided for all stitch patterns along with a step-by-step photo tutorial for working the dip-stitch droplets.
Gauge: 17 sts × 26 rows = 10 cm / 4"

Ardisia Knitted Shawl by Susanna Winter
Project Overview
Ardisia is a right-angle triangle shawl designed by Susanna Winter and inspired by the marlberry plant, known for its vibrant droplet-like berries. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished, rustic shawl suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a project with visual interest and botanical inspiration.
What Is Being Made
A right-angle triangle shawl featuring a distinctive shape created through directional increases. The shawl is worked on the bias, meaning the knitting progresses diagonally across the fabric. The triangular construction allows for easy customization—knitters can modify the finished size by working more or fewer pattern repeats to suit their preferences. Three corners of the completed shawl are finished with decorative tassels that enhance the rustic aesthetic.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Bias construction: The shawl is worked on the bias with increases strategically placed along a single edge, while the other two edges remain straight throughout the entire project
- I-cord edging: A framing technique that creates a finished, polished border around all three edges of the triangle
- Tassel attachment: Decorative corner embellishments that add textural detail and rustic charm
- Dip stitches: A specialty stitch technique used to create the scattered droplet motifs that reference the shawl's botanical inspiration
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
Ardisia features two distinct stitch patterns that work together to create visual depth and movement:
- Twining rib: A stitch pattern that visually resembles cables but is constructed differently, creating a textured appearance without the complexity of traditional cable work
- Dip stitch droplets: Scattered throughout the shawl, these specialty stitches form droplet-shaped motifs that echo the marlberry berries that inspired the design
Pattern Format and Instructions
The pattern is provided in a comprehensive downloadable PDF format with both written and charted instructions for all stitch patterns. Dual terminology is included throughout, with both metric and US measurements and abbreviations to accommodate knitters using different standard systems. A step-by-step photo tutorial is included to guide knitters through the techniques, particularly helpful for mastering the dip stitch construction.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Ardisia is designed to be worked in a rustic sport-weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that creates a fabric with excellent drape and delicate stitch definition. Sport weight is ideal for shawls as it produces an airy, flowing garment while remaining substantial enough to showcase stitch patterns clearly. The choice of yarn weight contributes to the shawl's refined yet rustic aesthetic.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle specialty stitches and shaping methods. The combination of directional increases, dip stitches, and stitch pattern work provides engaging challenges without requiring advanced expertise.
