Product Description
For the Arctic Mermaid; I designed her in a lying position, with her “knees” bent upwards. She has large, flowing multi-colored tail fins. She is wearing a bandeau top that is part of her construction (not separately made) & has long curling, high-lighted hair. She is wearing a delicate pearl necklace.
The pattern is classified as Advanced Beginner - Intermediate Level. She is constructed in one main piece from the top of her head to the tip of her tail. Arms are crocheted on after the body is completed. There is minimal sewing (fins & hair cap).
Jeweler’s Wire is used in her arms to make them pose-able and Poly-Pellets are used to weigh her down so she lies upright without tipping.
She measures approx. 9” tall, from stomach to the top of her head. These measurements are when Medium Weight Yarn (4) and a 3.5 mm hook are used. Any weight yarn and correlating hook size could be substituted as long as all colors of yarn are the same size.
Arctic Mermaid Crochet Doll
What Is Being Made
The Arctic Mermaid is a crocheted amigurumi-style doll designed by Heather Kumpf and published by Violets&Heather in 2021. This decorative doll measures approximately 9 inches tall when measured from stomach to top of head in a lying position, making it a compact handmade companion piece or collectible. The design features a mermaid character with a distinct tail, bikini top, and detailed facial features, suitable for display or gifting.
Techniques Used
The Arctic Mermaid pattern employs fundamental crochet amigurumi construction techniques. The majority of the pattern is worked in continuous rounds, a method that creates seamless tubular sections without joining or turning. This approach requires the use of a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round and maintain consistent shaping throughout the piece. The continuous round method is ideal for creating the three-dimensional body components that define amigurumi dolls, including the head, body, tail, and appendages. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases that form the characteristic rounded forms of the doll's anatomy.
Stitches Used
While the pattern description does not enumerate specific stitches in detail, amigurumi construction of this type typically relies on fundamental crochet stitches including single crochet as the primary stitch for creating dense, sturdy fabric. The continuous round structure suggests consistent stitch work throughout, with increases and decreases incorporated to shape the doll's body, head, tail, and facial features.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for medium weight (4) yarn in multiple colors. Specific yarn recommendations include Caron One Pound in Lace for skin tone, Hobby Lobby's I Love this Yarn Prints in Deep Sea Diving for the tail color, and Hobby Lobby's I Love this Yarn in Peacock for fin and bikini detailing. Hair and fin colors are also specified in the original pattern materials list.
Hook and Notions: A 3.5 mm crochet hook is used with the recommended medium weight yarn. The pattern accommodates yarn weight substitutions as long as all colors remain the same weight and hook size is adjusted accordingly. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming, a stitch marker for tracking rounds, and scissors for cutting yarn.
Stuffing and Embellishment: The doll is constructed as a three-dimensional form requiring poly pellet beads for weight and structure, held in place with nylon stocking material to prevent beads from shifting. PolyFiber filling provides cushioning and shape retention. Embellishments include 16 gauge jeweler's wire for poseable elements, one 8mm pearl bead, and two 5mm pearl beads for facial or decorative details.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, indicating it is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to progress beyond basic projects. The continuous round construction, three-dimensional shaping, and incorporation of stuffing and beading details require familiarity with amigurumi techniques and comfortable handling of stitch markers and shaping methods.
Pattern Format
The Arctic Mermaid pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF written using US crochet terminology, making it accessible to English-speaking crocheters familiar with standard American abbreviations and stitch definitions.
