Product Description
The Aran Diamond Cafetière Cosy uses a traditional Aran diamond stitch pattern to work a rectangular cosy shape, which is finished by knitting three tabs with buttonholes. The seed stitch from the centre diamonds is echoed in the border, although the central diamond can easily be left plain for knitters less confident in their ability to work consistent seed stitch.
One size is given, to suit a standard 8-cup French press/cafetiere.
As a knitter from the Aran Islands, I love taking traditional motifs, and adapting them to suit modern lifestyles.
A matching teacosy is also available to purchase.
Aran Diamond Coffee Cozy
What Is Being Made
The Aran Diamond Coffee Cozy is a knitted cafetiere cosy designed to fit a standard 8-cup coffee pot. This rectangular cosy features decorative buttonhole tabs and is secured to the pot using three buttons, eliminating the need for precise gauge matching. The finished cosy measures approximately 9½ inches (24cm) in length by 5½ inches (14cm) in width, with tabs measuring ½ inch (1.5cm).
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project is worked flat using seed stitch, also known as moss stitch. Seed stitch is a fundamental textured stitch that creates visual interest through alternating knit and purl stitches in both vertical and horizontal directions. This stitch pattern produces a dense, reversible fabric with excellent drape and structure—ideal for a functional coffee cosy that maintains its shape around a cafetiere.
The pattern incorporates buttonhole tabs as a design feature, allowing the cosy to be securely fastened with buttons rather than relying on tight gauge. This design choice makes the project more forgiving for knitters of varying experience levels, as minor gauge variations will not affect the fit.
Materials and Tools Required
Yarn: The project requires 50g of aran weight yarn. The designer used Aldi So Crafty Aran (80% acrylic, 20% wool blend), which is machine-washable—a practical choice for a coffee-related accessory that may require regular cleaning.
Needles and Notions:
- 5mm (US8) knitting needles (straight or circular needles may be used, as the cosy is worked flat)
- Cable needle
- Knitter's sewing needle or tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- 3 buttons, each approximately 1 inch (2.5cm) in diameter
- Sewing needle and thread for button attachment
Gauge Information
While precise gauge is not critical for this project due to the button-secured design, the pattern provides a reference gauge of 19 stitches by 28 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when working seed stitch on 5mm (US8) needles. This information serves as a helpful guide for yarn substitution, though variations will not compromise the cosy's functionality.
