Product Description
This coffee cosy knitting pattern was designed to bring a traditional Aran knitting motif, the diamond, a bright new look with vibrant colour. As a knitter from the Aran Islands, I love adapting the classic stitch patterns to suit a more contemporary lifestyle. The pattern was originally published in the UK magazine 'Your Crochet & Knitting', and has both written and charted instructions. The cosy is designed to be knit flat, and is fastened onto the coffee pot with 3 buttons. Any fingering weight yarn is suitable - this is a great way to use up little leftovers, as only a small amount of the contrast colours is needed. The pattern has instuctions on working it in 3 colours, but it can also be worked in only one colour. Around 55m/60 yards of yarn are required.
Skill level: Beginner-Intermediate. The cabling is straightforward, and the colour changes are only worked at the edges. The cosy can also be worked in only 1 colour.
Aran Diamond Coffee Cosy
What is Being Made
The Aran Diamond Coffee Cosy is a knitted accessory designed to fit a standard 8-cup cafetiere. This functional piece combines traditional Aran diamond stitch patterns with vibrant colour work to create an eye-catching kitchen accessory. The cosy is secured around the cafetiere handle with three buttons for practical everyday use.
Design Features
This design takes a classic Aran diamond stitch pattern as its foundation and enhances it with colour changes positioned strategically at the edge of the cable work. The traditional Aran diamond motif is complemented by the addition of vibrant colours that bring visual interest to the piece. The cosy offers design flexibility—it can be worked in three distinct colours as written in the pattern, or simplified to a single colour for a more understated appearance.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Flat knitting: The cosy is worked flat rather than in the round, making it accessible for knitters who prefer working on straight needles
- Cable work: Traditional Aran cable techniques form the structural and decorative elements of the diamond pattern
- Colour work: Strategic colour changes are incorporated at the edges of the Aran diamond cable, allowing for vibrant visual effects
- Button attachment: Three buttons are sewn onto the finished piece to secure the cosy around the cafetiere handle
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches combined with cable techniques. Key stitches include knit (K) and purl (P) stitches that form the stockinette stitch base. Cable 5 backwards (C5B) is a cable stitch where 3 stitches are slipped onto a cable needle, creating the characteristic twisted rope effect that defines Aran patterns. These stitches work together to create the dimensional diamond motif that is the signature of this design.
Materials and Specifications
The Aran Diamond Coffee Cosy is worked in 4-ply fingering weight yarn composed of 100% polyester. The yarn kit supplies three skeins—one each in Main Colour (MC), Contrast Colour 1 (CC1), and Contrast Colour 2 (CC2)—with each skein providing 55 metres or 60 yards of yarn. Knitting is worked on 3.5mm (US4) straight needles measuring 26cm in length. The tension is measured at 24 stitches by 40 rows over 10 centimetres in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished size to fit the standard cafetiere. Additional supplies required include three 10mm buttons, a sewing needle, matching thread for button attachment, and a cable needle for working the Aran cable stitches.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle cable work and colour changes. The combination of Aran diamond cables with colour work provides a rewarding project that builds skills in both texture and colour management.
