Doll-Sized Apron by Stana D. Sortor

Project Overview

This is a charming knitted apron designed for dolls, created by independent designer Stana D. Sortor. The finished apron measures 5 inches (13 cm) wide and 5.5 inches (14 cm) tall, making it perfectly proportioned for doll accessories and dress-up projects. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for crafters looking to expand their doll wardrobe collection with handmade pieces.

What Is Being Made

A miniature apron suitable for dolls, featuring a two-color design that combines a main color with a contrasting accent color. The apron is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques and is designed to be accessible to beginners while producing an adorable finished accessory.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs the I-cord technique, which is a fundamental knitting method for creating tubes and decorative edging. The I-cord technique involves knitting a set number of stitches from one needle to a second needle without turning the work. Instead of turning, the stitches are pushed to the beginning of the needle and knitted again in the next row. This continuous process creates a smooth, tubular cord that adds structure and detail to the apron design.

Stitches and Stitch Work

  • Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the pattern, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance
  • Knit (K): Basic knit stitch used to build the fabric structure
  • Purl (P): Purl stitch used in stockinette construction and pattern variations
  • I-cord: Specialty technique used for creating tubular elements, likely used for straps, edging, or decorative trim on the apron

Yarn and Materials

The pattern recommends Worsted Weight YarnCascade 220 Superwash, which is 100% Superwash Wool offering 220 yards per 100 grams (3.5 ounces). Two colors are used: #1951 Sapphire Heather as the main color (MC) and #875 Feather Grey as the contrast color (CC). Total yardage required is 50 yards (46 meters) of main color and 15 yards (14 meters) of contrast color—requiring just 1 skein of each color.

Needles and Notions

This pattern is worked on Double Pointed Needles (DPN) US #5 / 3.75 mm in a set of 5. Additional notions needed include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and a stitch marker to track pattern rounds.

Gauge

The pattern gauge is 20 stitches and 26 rows equals 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the apron to finish at the correct doll-appropriate dimensions.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft or those seeking a quick, satisfying project. The straightforward stitch work and small finished size allow beginners to practice fundamental techniques while creating a functional doll accessory.

Craft Classification

This is a knitting project, specifically designed within the dolls and doll accessories category. The pattern combines basic knitting skills with creative miniature design to produce wearable doll clothing.
