April Jumper by Neringa Ruke

What is Being Made

The April jumper is an oversize, hip-length knitted sweater designed for a relaxed, feminine aesthetic. This top-down knit features a beautiful front neckline and is engineered to fit comfortably with 25-30cm (8-12 inches) of positive ease. The garment is available in eight sizes ranging from XS to 4X, with the pictured sample shown in size L. The April jumper pairs well with leggings, shorts, and casual clothing, making it a versatile wardrobe staple that prioritizes comfort without sacrificing style.

Construction Technique

The April jumper is worked using a top-down construction method, allowing knitters to try on the garment as they progress and easily customize the length. This approach begins at the neckline and works downward toward the hem, providing flexibility in the final fit. The design features distinctly shaped sleeves that are especially wide at the body attachment point and gradually narrow toward the cuffs, creating an elegant taper that frames the wrist.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The April jumper incorporates Rib stitch as a key structural element throughout the design. The neckline is worked in Rib stitch and is intentionally designed to be folded, creating a neat and beautifully fitted finish at the neck opening. Both the cuffs and hem are also finished with Rib stitch, providing elasticity and a polished appearance that prevents rolling and maintains shape through wear and washing.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern calls for two yarns held together simultaneously, creating a blended fiber composition:

  • Filcolana Tilia: 70% kid mohair and 30% silk blend; 25g (0.88oz) per skein with 210 meters (230 yards) of yardage; colour no. 342
  • Filcolana Peruvian Highland Wool: 100% virgin wool; 50g (1.8oz) per skein with 100 meters (110 yards) of yardage; colour no. 812

The combined yarn weight is classified as Worsted/Afghan/Aran weight. When held together, these two distinct fibers create a luxurious, textured yarn that combines the softness and halo effect of kid mohair with the warmth and durability of pure virgin wool. This chunky yarn weight allows for relatively quick knitting progress, making the April jumper suitable for intermediate-level knitters who have experience with shaping and stitch techniques.

Difficulty Level

The April jumper is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the basic construction is straightforward, knitters should be comfortable with top-down garment construction, working with multiple yarn strands held together, managing sleeve shaping, and executing Rib stitch patterns. The positive ease and relaxed fit provide some forgiveness in fit adjustments, making this an accessible intermediate project for those ready to move beyond simple stockinette patterns.
