Apple Granny Square by RaffamusaDesigns

What Is Being Made

The Apple Granny Square is a crochet square design created as part of the Christmas Granny Squares Crochet-Along (CAL) that ran from November 10 through December 21, 2020. Each finished square measures 5.5 inches (14 centimeters) and is designed as an intermediate-level crochet project. This granny square can be used individually as a coaster, dishcloth, or decorative piece, or combined with other squares from the CAL series to create larger blankets, afghans, or seasonal home décor items.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

The Apple Granny Square employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The pattern begins with a magic circle (MC), a popular method for starting projects from the center outward. The design is worked in the round using multiple rounds of increases to expand the square gradually and evenly.

The construction method uses half double crochet stitches (hdc) as the primary stitch throughout the initial rounds. Round 1 establishes the foundation by working 11 half double crochets into the magic circle, then joining with a slip stitch. Round 2 incorporates increases, doubling the stitch count to 22 stitches. Round 3 continues with a pattern of increases alternating with single stitches, bringing the total to 33 stitches. By Round 3, the piece should measure 2.25 inches (5.5 centimeters), providing a gauge reference for proper tension and sizing.

The pattern includes special stitches such as picot stitches, which add decorative detail and texture to the finished square. Crocheters may also work into the back loop only (BLO) or front loop only (FLO) in certain sections to create visual interest and dimensional effects.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (Ch) – Foundation and connecting stitch
  • Half Double Crochet (Hdc) – Primary stitch for the main body
  • Single Crochet (Sc) – Used in stitch patterns and increases
  • Double Crochet (Dc) – Likely used in later rounds or border details
  • Treble Crochet (Tr) – Possible inclusion for texture variation
  • Slip Stitch (Sl St) – Used for joining rounds
  • Picot Stitch – Decorative edging element
  • Increase (Inc) – Yarn over and work multiple stitches into one stitch
  • Decrease (Dec) – Combines stitches to reduce stitch count

Materials and Tools

The Apple Granny Square is worked with DK weight yarn, specifically Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, which is a versatile, medium-weight yarn ideal for creating fabric with good drape and definition. DK weight allows stitches to be clearly visible while maintaining a relatively quick working pace.

Two crochet hooks are required for this project. The primary hook is a 4-mm (G/6 USA, 8 UK) hook, used for the majority of the pattern. A secondary 3.5-mm (E/4 USA, 9 UK) hook is also listed in the materials, which may be used for a tighter gauge section, border work, or finishing details. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends and potentially seaming squares together if making a larger project.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with techniques like the magic circle, increases, and special stitches. The straightforward round-by-round construction and clear stitch counts make it accessible for progressing crafters while offering enough technique variety to remain engaging.
