Product Description

Anning, is a development of another crochet shawl I have released, She Sells Sea Shawls; Version 2.0 if you will. The inspiration for these shawls came from the historical figure, Mary Anning, a 19th century fossil hunter who challenged the paleontology establishment in the pursuit of recognition for her work. Anning is something of a local celebrity to the town of Lyme Regis in Dorset. The layers of puff stitches and lace panels in both these shawls reference the geological layers found along Dorset's 'Jurassic Coast'.

Anning Shawl by The Ticcy Knitter

What is Being Made

The Anning Shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl from the "She Sells Sea Shawls v2.0" collection by designer Russell Sansom. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a finished and blocked shawl measuring 60 inches wide by 18 inches deep, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern uses DK weight yarn in a total of 8 balls of a single color, requiring approximately 1000 meters or 1088 yards total yardage. The recommended yarn is Eco Fusion by Nurturing Fibres, a sustainable blend of 50% cotton and 50% bamboo. Each ball of Eco Fusion contains 125 meters or 136 yards. The pattern requires a 3mm crochet hook.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The Anning Shawl is an intermediate-level crochet project that incorporates a range of fundamental and specialized crochet techniques. Understanding these stitches and techniques is essential for successfully completing this shawl.

Standard Stitches Used

  • Skip stitch (sk st) – A foundational technique used to skip over stitches in a row or round
  • Chain (ch1) – The basic building block of crochet, used for foundation chains and connecting stitches
  • Chain space (chsp) – An opening created by chains that allows for openwork and lacy construction
  • Single crochet (sc) – A short, tight stitch commonly used for structure and shaping
  • Half double crochet (hdc) – A medium-height stitch that provides moderate density and drape
  • Treble crochet (tr) – A tall stitch that creates an open, airy fabric ideal for shawl construction

Special Stitches Used

The Anning Shawl features a distinctive Puff Stitch, which adds textural interest and dimension to the design. The puff stitch is constructed by working multiple yarn overs and loop pulls into the same stitch location, creating a puffy, dimensional element. The technique involves: yarn over, pull up one loop (creating 3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull up one loop (creating 5 loops on hook), yarn over, pull up one loop (creating 7 loops on hook), then yarn over and pull through all seven loops on hook, followed by chain 1. The chain 1 does not count as a separate stitch in the pattern sequence.

Pattern Notation and Instructions

The pattern uses standard crochet notation conventions. Square brackets [ and ] denote a set of stitches to be worked into the same stitch location, allowing for increases and clustered stitch groups. Parentheses ( and ) denote special instructions or repeated sequences that require particular attention during construction.

Design Collection

The Anning Shawl is part of the "She Sells Sea Shawls v2.0" collection, indicating it is a refined version of an earlier design. This collection focuses on shawl patterns suitable for various skill levels and yarn preferences.
