Children's Sweater with Giraffe Design by Sandy's Creations
Project Overview
This is a children's crew neck sweater featuring a giraffe motif, designed by Sandy Myerson. The sweater is available in four sizes (4, 6, 8, and 10) with finished chest measurements ranging from 28 to 34 inches. The garment uses a set-in sleeve construction, a classic tailoring technique that provides a fitted, professional appearance suitable for everyday wear.
Craft and Knitting Techniques
This project is created using the knitting craft. The sweater employs several fundamental knitting techniques to construct a structured, wearable garment:
- Ribbing – Used for the waistband and collar, ribbing creates elasticity and helps the sweater maintain its shape. The pattern uses a 1x1 rib (alternating knit and purl stitches) to provide stretch and recovery.
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch used for the body of the sweater, creating a smooth, uniform fabric with a flat knit face and reverse purl back.
- Decrease Stitches – Used to shape the armholes and neckline. The pattern specifies a slip-stitch decrease at the beginning of knit rows and a knit-two-together decrease near the end of rows, creating symmetrical shaping.
- Intarsia Colorwork – The giraffe design is worked using the intarsia technique, which involves knitting with multiple colors in a single row. Yarn bobbins are used to manage separate color sections, preventing long floats and maintaining fabric integrity.
- Set-in Sleeves – The sleeves are shaped and sewn into armholes, requiring careful decreases and precise seaming for a professional fit.
Stitches Used
The sweater incorporates three primary stitches:
- Knit Stitch (K) – The fundamental stitch that creates the face of stockinette stitch.
- Purl Stitch (P) – Used in ribbing and as the reverse side of stockinette stitch.
- Slip Stitch (Slip 1 as if to K) – Used in the decrease technique to create a neat, slanted decrease.
- Knit Two Together (K2tog) – A right-leaning decrease used for shaping.
Materials and Gauge
The sweater is worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits quickly and provides good stitch definition for the giraffe pattern. The yarn is machine washable and dryable, making it practical for children's clothing. Yarn quantities vary by size, ranging from 4 to 7 balls of 50-gram weight for the main color, with 1 ball each of gold and rust for the giraffe design.
Two needle sizes are required: US #5 needles for ribbing and US #7 needles for the body. The smaller needles create tighter ribbing for better elasticity, while the larger needles accommodate the stockinette stitch body. The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.
Additional Materials
The pattern requires 2 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and yarn bobbins for managing the separate color sections in the intarsia giraffe design.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses basic stitches, the combination of techniques—including ribbing, stockinette stitch, decreases, intarsia colorwork, and set-in sleeve construction—requires knitting experience and attention to detail. The intarsia technique and precise shaping make this suitable for knitters who have completed simpler projects and are ready to develop their skills.
Design Features
The giraffe motif is the focal point of this sweater, displayed on the front and back using a center graph pattern positioned between the waistband and collar. The pattern placement varies by size, starting immediately after the ribbing at heights ranging from 1 to 2½ inches above

Knits up well but very important to do tension square as the US weights of wool are different to UK weights of wool. I ended up using Aran and a size larger needles than prescribed.
