Product Description
Angel on Angel is a pretty little A-line cardigan that buttons down the back (an angel top), featuring cute lace angels in both the lower border and the centre front.
It is designed to be worn with the opening at the back, but can also be worn as a front-buttoned cardigan, or knitted longer and be worn as a dress. Instructions are given for both short and long sleeves.
Angel on Angel is a simply constructed, seamless, raglan sleeve cardigan that is knitted from the bottom up, with the back bands knitted with the body, so no sewing is required. The body is knitted flat and the sleeves are knitted in the round.
The pattern is for use with light sport or fingering weight yarn and is in three sizes, from birth to 1 year (0 -3, 3 – 6, and 6 – 12 months). Detailed written instructions and an optional chart are given, as well as a schematic diagram. All measurements are given in both metric and imperial.

What is Being Made
Angel on Angel is a charming A-line sweater cardigan designed by Sharyn Armstrong for Baby Jumbuck Knits. This versatile garment features an angel top construction with a back button opening, making it suitable for infants from birth through 12 months. The design offers multiple styling options: it can be worn with the opening at the back as intended, reconfigured as a front-buttoned cardigan, or knitted longer to function as a dress. The pattern includes instructions for both short and long sleeve variations, allowing customization based on season and preference.
Construction Method
Angel on Angel is constructed as a seamless, raglan sleeve cardigan using a bottom-up knitting approach. The body is knitted flat while the sleeves are worked in the round, combining the efficiency of flat and circular knitting techniques. A key feature of this design is that the back bands are knitted together with the body during construction, eliminating the need for seaming and finishing work. This streamlined construction method makes the pattern accessible to intermediate knitters while maintaining a polished, professional finish.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern incorporates decorative lace elements as a primary design feature. Angel motifs appear in both the lower border and the centre front of the cardigan, adding visual interest and delicate detailing to the garment. These lace angels are worked using stitch techniques that create openwork patterns characteristic of lace knitting. The pattern provides both detailed written instructions and an optional chart for working the lace sections, accommodating different knitter preferences and experience levels.
Sizing and Fit
The Angel on Angel pattern is available in three sizes designed for growing infants:
- Newborn to 3 months (0–3 months)
- 3 to 6 months
- 6 to 12 months
The A-line silhouette provides comfortable, forgiving fit that accommodates growth and layering. All measurements are provided in both metric and imperial units, with a schematic diagram included for accurate sizing reference.
Yarn and Materials
Angel on Angel is designed for light sport weight or fingering weight yarn, which corresponds to 4-ply yarn classifications. These fine yarn weights create delicate fabric suitable for a baby garment while allowing lace patterns to display beautifully. The lightweight construction makes the cardigan appropriate for layering and transitional weather wear.
Pattern Documentation
This downloadable PDF pattern includes comprehensive documentation to support knitters at the intermediate level. Knitters receive detailed written instructions alongside optional charted instructions for the lace sections. A schematic diagram is provided for reference during construction and for verifying finished measurements. The inclusion of both metric and imperial measurements ensures accessibility for knitters worldwide.
Skill Level
Angel on Angel is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern. While the seamless construction and raglan shaping are relatively straightforward, the inclusion of lace motifs requires familiarity with lace knitting techniques such as yarn overs and decreases. Knitters comfortable with reading charts and working lace patterns will find this project manageable and rewarding.
