Anemone Sweater by Marie Wallin

What is Being Made

Anemone is a women's knitted sweater designed by Marie Wallin, available in five sizes ranging from Small (to fit bust 81-86 cm / 32-34 in) through to XXL (to fit bust 122-127 cm / 48-50 in). This intermediate-level garment combines knitting and crochet techniques to create a sophisticated pullover suitable for warm-weather wear.

Primary Construction and Techniques

Knitting forms the foundation of the Anemone sweater, used for the main body pieces including the back and front panels. The garment begins with a ribbed cuff worked on 2¼mm needles, establishing structure and elasticity at the lower edge. The body is then worked in stockinette stitch using 3mm needles, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for drape and comfort.

Crochet is integrated as a secondary technique, specifically featured on the sleeves. The sleeve pattern incorporates crochet stitches worked on a 2.50mm crochet hook, adding textural interest and visual detail to this area of the garment. This mixed-craft approach allows for varied stitch textures within a single cohesive design.

Stitches Used

  • Knitting stitches: Ribbing (alternating knit and purl stitches in a 2x2 pattern), stockinette stitch (knit on right-side rows, purl on wrong-side rows)
  • Crochet stitches: Chain (ch), double crochet (dc), treble (tr), slip stitch (ss), and spaces (sp) created between stitches for an openwork or lace-like effect on the sleeves

Materials and Specifications

The Anemone pattern calls for Rowan Summerlite, a 4-ply weight yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size (S) requires 6 x 50gm balls, increasing to 10 x 50gm balls for the largest size (XXL). The photographed sample is worked in Rowan Summerlite White 417, though the yarn is available in other colorways.

Needles and hooks required:

  • One pair of 2¼mm (US size 1) needles for the ribbed cuff
  • One pair of 3mm (US size 2/3) needles for the main body in stockinette stitch
  • 2.50mm (US size B1/C2) crochet hook for sleeve pattern work

Tension and Gauge

Achieving correct tension is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies 28 stitches and 36 rows to 10 cm when measured over stockinette stitch using the 3mm needles. For the crochet sleeve pattern, 36 stitches (6 pattern repeats) measure 14 cm in width, and 20 rows (5 pattern repeats) measure 12.5 cm in height when worked with the 2.50mm crochet hook. Checking gauge before beginning ensures the finished garment will fit as intended across all five size options.
