Anchor Adventure Paper Boat Embroidery Pattern (ANC0003-66) by Ana Clara Bordou
The Anchor Adventure Paper Boat (Design No. ANC0003-66) is a free downloadable PDF embroidery pattern designed by Ana Clara Bordou (known online as anaclara.bordou) and published by Anchor Crafts. This charming hoop art design features a whimsical paper boat scene complete with billowing clouds, a decorative banner, and a personalizable quote — making it a delightful project for embroiderers who enjoy illustrative, folk-inspired needlework.
What Is Being Made
The finished piece is a framed embroidery hoop artwork, worked on beige cotton fabric and displayed in a 17 cm embroidery hoop with screw. The design centres on an adventure-themed paper boat composition and includes several distinct elements: large and small clouds rendered in different textures, a decorative banner, and a hand-lettered quote that can be fully personalized. The pattern includes a complete alphabet at the end of the PDF, allowing stitchers to spell out any words or names they choose — a thoughtful feature that makes this design suitable as a personalized gift or keepsake.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated Intermediate by Anchor Crafts. While it is accessible to embroiderers who have moved beyond the basics, it does require familiarity with a range of stitches and the ability to work with multiple strand counts and color combinations simultaneously. Beginners who have practiced foundational stitches on simpler projects will find this a rewarding next step.

Stitches Used
One of the most educational aspects of this pattern is the breadth of embroidery stitches it introduces and combines. The following six stitches are all used within the design:
- Back Stitch — used with 2 strands of #00235 to embroider the letters forming the quote. Back stitch is a classic outline stitch that produces a clean, continuous line, making it ideal for text and fine detail work.
- Whipped Back Stitch — used for the contour of the banner, combining #00001 (White) and #00169 (Blue 2). In whipped back stitch, a foundation row of back stitch is first laid down, then a second thread is woven or whipped through the stitches without piercing the fabric, creating a twisted, rope-like effect with beautiful two-color contrast.
- Satin Stitch — used with 3 strands of #00169 to fill the decorative detail below the banner. Satin stitch involves laying parallel straight stitches side by side to create a smooth, solid fill — a technique that rewards careful tension and even spacing.
- Stem Stitch — used with 4 strands of #00159 (Blue 1) to embroider the contour of the larger clouds. Stem stitch produces a slightly twisted, rope-like
