Product Description

Anakie is a shawl that is an exercise in exploration. It plays around with short rows to create an asymmetrical shallow shawl full of stripes, garter stitch movement and angles; a glorious interplay of solids and stripes in an unconventional manner. Knit in 8ply/DK weight yarn, Anakie knits up quickly into a snuggly easy-to-wear accessory that is both a delight to knit and wear. Anakie uses German short rows but your preferred method can easily be substituted.

Anakie is named for a tiny town on the outskirts of Geelong. I’ve always been attracted tot he play on words in the place name and have fancily imagined a town ruled by disorder and chaos (some of the scenes from Mad Max were shot there). This is not the case. Anakie is, however, derived from a local Wathaurong expression “anakie young” meaning little hill.

Construction:

This is an asymmetrical shawl worked from edge to edge using increases and decreases for the shaping. Short rows are used to create movement and shaping.

Anakie Knitting Shawl by Georgie Nicolson

What is Being Made

Anakie is an asymmetrical shallow shawl designed as an exercise in creative exploration. This intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a finished accessory measuring 58 inches (147.5 centimeters) from tip to tip with a depth of 17½ inches (44.5 centimeters). The shawl is designed to be a snuggly, easy-to-wear accessory that combines visual interest with wearability.

Design and Construction Techniques

Anakie employs short rows as its primary construction technique to create the distinctive asymmetrical shape and shallow silhouette. The pattern specifically uses German short rows, though the designer notes that knitters may substitute their preferred short row method without compromising the final result. This technique-driven approach allows the shawl to develop its characteristic angles and unconventional construction.

The design plays with an interplay of solids and stripes, creating visual movement through color work rather than complex stitch patterns. This approach makes the shawl both a delight to knit and wear, offering visual interest without requiring advanced colorwork skills.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

  • Garter stitch — provides textural movement and is a foundational element throughout the pattern
  • Knit stitches — including standard knit (k) and knit through back loop (k1tbl) variations
  • Striped colorwork — created through color changes rather than complex stitch techniques

The combination of garter stitch movement with stripe patterns creates a glorious interplay of texture and color across the asymmetrical design.

Yarn and Materials

Anakie is knit in 8ply/DK weight yarn, a medium weight that allows the shawl to knit up quickly while maintaining structure and drape. DK weight yarn is ideal for creating a shawl that is both substantial enough to be functional and light enough for comfortable everyday wear. The pattern accommodates color work with solid and striped sections, making it suitable for yarns in contrasting or complementary colors.

Skill Level and Pattern Details

This pattern is rated as Intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced techniques. The intermediate rating reflects the use of short rows and the asymmetrical construction rather than complex stitch work, allowing intermediate knitters to expand their technical repertoire while creating a wearable garment.

The pattern includes a schematic for reference and uses standard knitting abbreviations. One size is provided, eliminating the need for sizing adjustments.

Inspiration and Naming

Anakie is named for a small town on the outskirts of Geelong. The name derives from a local Wathaurong expression "anakie youang," meaning little hill. The designer was attracted to the playful nature of the place name and its association with creative exploration, which inspired the shawl's unconventional approach to design and construction.
