- tapestry needle
This is an easy level pattern, requiring only basic shaping. Detailed finishing photos provided.
Amigurumi Stuart the Clam Puppet
What is Being Made
Stuart the Clam Puppet is a small amigurumi-style crocheted toy designed by Stacey Trock. This finished puppet measures 4 inches wide by 2 inches tall and was originally created in August 2010. The project creates a cute, three-dimensional clam character suitable for play, display, or as a puppet accessory.
Crochet Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several key techniques to create its finished form. The pattern utilizes stitching into the back loop only, a technique that creates distinctive ridges on the right side of the crocheted fabric, adding visual texture and definition to the clam's body. The designer provides detailed instruction on identifying and working into the back loop to achieve the proper appearance. The project also incorporates single crochet 2 together (sc2tog), a decrease stitch used to shape and reduce stitches as needed throughout the construction.
Stitches Used
The pattern relies on fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for amigurumi construction:
- Chain (ch) – used to create foundation chains and joining techniques
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building the clam's body and creating dense, structured fabric
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping and contouring the puppet
Materials and Tools
The project requires minimal materials, making it an efficient use of yarn resources. Less than 220 yards total is needed, typically using one skein of each color. The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn in three colors: Tan (main color), Pink (secondary color), and Black (accent color). The sample shown uses Plymouth Galway 100% wool worsted weight yarn in specific color numbers, though any worsted weight yarn can be substituted based on preference or availability.
Essential tools include a Size H crochet hook for working with the worsted weight yarn, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces, and two 12mm blue animal eyes for creating the clam's expressive face. These safety eyes are standard amigurumi components that bring personality to the finished puppet.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, Stuart the Clam Puppet is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle amigurumi construction, shaping techniques, and finishing details like eye attachment and assembly.
