Amigurumi Sheep - Ethel by Patchwork Moose
What is Being Made
Ethel the Sheep is a crocheted amigurumi toy designed by Kate E Hancock. This finished stuffed toy measures approximately 6 inches (15 centimeters) when sitting, making it an ideal size for a decorative piece, gift, or collectible handmade toy. The design creates a three-dimensional sheep character suitable for intermediate crocheters.
Crochet Techniques Used
This amigurumi pattern employs fundamental crochet construction techniques essential for creating stuffed toys. The pattern utilizes tight crochet stitching throughout to prevent toy filling from showing through the fabric. Amigurumi construction typically involves working in continuous rounds to build three-dimensional shapes, with increases and decreases strategically placed to form the body, head, and limbs of the sheep character. The pattern is written using UK crochet terminology, so crocheters familiar with US terms should cross-reference the abbreviations provided to ensure correct stitch selection.
Crochet Stitches Used
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt, amigurumi projects of this type typically employ fundamental stitches including single crochet for dense fabric construction, slip stitches for joining rounds, and various increase and decrease techniques to shape the toy. The pattern instructions will specify the exact stitches required for each section of Ethel's body.

- Crochet Hooks: 3.5mm (E) hook for main construction, and 3.25mm (D) hook for the optional crochet eyes

- Additional Materials: Toy filling for stuffing, yarn needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and a stitch marker for tracking rounds
Important Pattern Notes
This pattern is written using UK crochet terminology. Crocheters accustomed to US terminology must verify abbreviations before beginning to ensure they are working the correct stitches throughout the project. The finished size of Ethel depends directly on the yarn weight and hook size used. While the pattern is designed for DK weight yarn with a 3.5mm hook, crafters may substitute different yarn weights with appropriate hook adjustments. When using yarn heavier or lighter than DK weight, select a hook size slightly smaller than the yarn manufacturer recommends to maintain the tight tension necessary for amigurumi construction and prevent stuffing visibility.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, Ethel the Sheep requires foundational crochet knowledge and comfort with amigurumi shaping techniques. This pattern is suitable for crocheters who have completed basic projects and are ready to tackle three-dimensional toy construction with color changes and finishing details.
