Amigurumi Nasser the Baby Penguin
What is Being Made
Nasser the Baby Penguin is a small stuffed amigurumi toy designed by Stacey Trock. This crocheted plush measures 4 inches in height and features a charming baby penguin character with a date of birth marked as March 2010. The finished piece is a three-dimensional, soft sculpture perfect for display or as a handmade gift.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The amigurumi technique is employed throughout, which involves crocheting pieces in the round and stuffing them to create a dimensional, sculptural toy. The pattern requires intermediate-level crochet skills, as it involves shaping, color changes, and assembly of multiple components to form the complete penguin figure.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – used for foundation and construction
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building the body and features
- Double crochet (dc) – used for selected sections of the pattern
- Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) – used for decreasing stitches and shaping the penguin's form
Materials and Tools
The pattern requires less than 220 yards of yarn total, meaning a single skein of each color is sufficient. Worsted weight yarn is specified, with the sample created using 100% wool worsted weight yarn (Ella Rae brand), though any worsted weight yarn can be substituted. Three colors are needed:
- Main Color (MC) – Grey (Ella Rae color #123) for the penguin's body
- Secondary Color (SC) – Black (Ella Rae color #32) for contrast details
- Accent Color (AC) – White (Ella Rae color #01) for highlights
Additional materials include a Size H crochet hook, two 12mm black animal eyes for facial features, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and assembly, and a few handfuls of polyester fiberfill or similar stuffing material to fill the crocheted pieces and give the toy its plush, dimensional shape.
Pattern Notes
The pattern does not specify a strict gauge requirement, as the flexibility of amigurumi allows for slight variations in sizing without affecting the overall success of the project. The most important consideration is selecting a hook size that creates a fabric with good structure and appearance for your chosen yarn. If using the recommended Size H hook results in fabric that appears too loose, adjusting to a smaller hook size is advised to ensure the stuffing does not show through the stitches and the toy maintains its intended shape and firmness.
