Oscar the Monkey Amigurumi Pattern
What Is Being Made
Oscar the Monkey is an amigurumi toy pattern designed by Kate E Hancock through Patchwork Moose. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a small stuffed monkey toy measuring approximately 4 to 5 inches (10 to 12 centimeters) in finished height. Amigurumi is a Japanese crochet technique for creating small, three-dimensional stuffed toys and decorative pieces with a characteristic rounded, cute appearance.
Craft and Technique
This pattern uses the amigurumi crochet technique, which involves crocheting in continuous rounds to build three-dimensional forms. The pattern is written using UK crochet terminology, so crocheters familiar with US terms should verify abbreviations before beginning. A key requirement for successful amigurumi construction is crocheting tightly enough to prevent toy filling from showing through the stitches. The pattern accommodates flexibility in yarn and hook selection, though users should adjust hook size appropriately when substituting yarn weights to maintain proper fabric density and finished dimensions.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, amigurumi typically employs fundamental crochet stitches worked in continuous spirals. The pattern includes options for different eye construction methods, allowing crafters to choose between embroidered details or safety eyes, demonstrating versatility in finishing techniques.
Materials and Tools Required
- Yarn: Two 50-gram balls of DK weight yarn—one in main color (Yarn A) and one in contrast color (Yarn B)
- Crochet Hooks: 3.5mm (size E) hook for primary construction and 3.25mm (size D) hook for the optional crochet eyes method
- Stuffing: Toy filling for creating the three-dimensional form
- Eyes: Either 2 safety eyes measuring 20mm or small amounts of black and colored yarn for embroidered or crocheted eyes
- Finishing Supplies: Yarn or thread for embroidering nose and toe details, yarn needle for weaving in ends and embroidery work, and a stitch marker for tracking rounds
Difficulty Level
This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to advance beyond basic projects. The amigurumi technique and three-dimensional construction require understanding of continuous rounds and shaping methods, though the small finished size keeps the project manageable.
