Otis the Bat Amigurumi by Patchwork Moose

What Is Being Made

Otis is a crocheted amigurumi bat toy designed by Kate E Hancock for Patchwork Moose. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a stuffed bat approximately 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 centimeters) in sitting height. The finished amigurumi features a compact, three-dimensional form typical of the amigurumi style, making it suitable as a decorative toy or handmade gift.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques to create a tight, seamless crocheted fabric. The design requires working in continuous rounds using single crochet stitches as the primary stitch throughout the project. A key technique emphasized in the pattern is tight crocheting to prevent toy filling from showing through the fabric. This is achieved by using a hook size slightly smaller than standard yarn recommendations, ensuring the stitches remain compact and secure around the stuffing.

The pattern uses stitch markers to track the beginning of each round, and incorporates color changes between the main color (Yarn A) and contrast color (Yarn B) to define different sections of the bat's body and features. Assembly involves seaming pieces together using a yarn needle and stuffing the crocheted form with toy filling before closure.

Stitches Used

  • Single crochet as the primary construction stitch
  • Increases and decreases for shaping the amigurumi form
  • Color changes to transition between yarn colors
  • Optional crochet stitches for eye details if choosing the crocheted eye option

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for DK weight yarn in two colors: a 50-gram ball of main color (Yarn A) and a 50-gram ball of contrast color (Yarn B). Three crochet hooks in different sizes are required: a 4mm (G) hook, a 3.5mm (E) hook, and a 3.25mm (D) hook for the optional crochet eyes. Additional materials include toy filling for stuffing, a yarn needle for seaming, and a stitch marker for tracking rounds.

For eyes, crafters may choose between two options: safety eyes (2 x 20mm) or crocheted eyes using small amounts of black and colored yarn. The pattern notes that a wire pet grooming brush is optional for finishing the amigurumi's texture. The pattern is written using US crochet terminology, and crafters are advised that using different yarn weights will affect the final size of the finished piece.

Pattern Notes for Crafters

This intermediate-level pattern emphasizes the importance of yarn weight and hook size selection. While any yarn and appropriate hook may be used, the finished dimensions will vary accordingly. The tight crocheting requirement is essential for amigurumi construction, making hook size adjustment critical when substituting yarn weights. The pattern includes design considerations for safety if the bat is intended as a toy for small children.
