Amigurumi Badger Ambrose by Patchwork Moose
What is Being Made
Ambrose the Badger is an amigurumi toy design created by Kate E Hancock for Patchwork Moose. This downloadable crochet pattern produces a small stuffed badger toy measuring approximately 6 inches (15 centimeters) when sitting. The finished piece is a three-dimensional crocheted animal suitable for display, play, or gifting, with an intermediate difficulty level appropriate for crocheters with foundational skills.
Crochet Techniques Used
This amigurumi pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques essential to creating stuffed toys. The design requires tight, consistent stitching throughout to prevent toy filling from showing through the fabric. Crocheters will work in continuous rounds using stitch markers to track the beginning of each round. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and involves shaping techniques to form the badger's body, head, limbs, and distinctive facial features. Increases and decreases are used strategically to create the three-dimensional form characteristic of amigurumi construction.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes basic crochet stitches fundamental to amigurumi construction. Single crochet is the primary stitch used throughout the piece, as it creates the tight, dense fabric necessary for stuffed toys. The pattern may incorporate increases (working multiple stitches into a single stitch) and decreases (combining stitches) to shape the badger's form. For the optional crochet eyes variation, additional yarn colors and fine stitching techniques are employed to create detailed facial features.
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn in three colors:
- Yarn A (White): 50g ball of DK weight yarn
- Yarn B (Black): 50g ball of DK weight yarn
- Yarn C (Grey): 50g ball of DK weight yarn
Essential crochet tools include a 3.5mm (E) crochet hook as the primary hook size and a 3.25mm (D) crochet hook for the optional crochet eyes variation. Additional materials needed are toy filling for stuffing, a yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces, and a stitch marker for tracking rounds. For eyes, crocheters may choose between 2 x 20mm safety eyes or create crocheted eyes using small amounts of black and colored yarn. The pattern notes that safety eyes should not be used if making this toy for small children; the crochet eyes option is recommended instead.
Design Flexibility and Customization
The pattern provides flexibility in yarn selection. While the design is written for DK weight yarn with specific hook sizes, crocheters can substitute any yarn weight and select an appropriately sized hook. However, the pattern emphasizes that changing yarn weight will directly affect the finished size of the badger. When using different yarn weights, it is important to use a slightly smaller hook than the yarn manufacturer recommends to maintain the tight tension necessary for amigurumi construction and prevent stuffing visibility.
